Opposition to the British
When the British East India Company invaded India, three wars took place between the Marathas and the British between 1777-1818. In 1818, the British conquered the Maratha kingdom. Apart from Vidarbha and Marathwada, present day Maharashtra was a part of the Bombay Presidency of the British. The Bombay Presidency was called Mumbai Ilakha in Marathi. The Mumbai area covers the area from Karachi to North Karnataka (Dharwad, Hubli, Belgaum, Karwar, Bijapur). Many Marathi kings ruled their respective kingdoms under British rule. Today's Nagpur, Satara and Kolhapur were under the control of various kings at that time. Satara was annexed to Mumbai in 1848 and Nagpur was annexed to Nagpur (and later to Central) in 1853. (Varhad) Berar was a part of the Nizam's kingdom of Hyderabad. The British occupied Berar in 1853 and annexed it to the Central Provinces in 1903.
Marathwada remained under the rule of Nizam. The British brought social reforms as well as many civic amenities. But their discriminatory decisions and their sense of independence created dissatisfaction among Indians. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Lokmanya Tilak fought against the British, which was later led by Mahatma Gandhi. Mumbai was an important center of the Indian independence struggle.
