I have been to San Francisco many time over the years. All too often work conferences and conventions where scheduled there, and to be honest, many times I passed on attending. Not because I didn't like the location, but because I had visited so many times in the past. I still remember my first crab sandwich on Pier 39, what an amazing experience! If you haven't experienced it for yourself I highly recommend it...
So why are we talking about San Francisco? On March 28, 1776 it was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza. Were they the first people there? Of course not, only the first recorded Europeans. And no, I am not Native American... It's just funny that anyone can claim anyplace when someone else is already there, but such is the way of the world.
Since the city was founded on this day in 1776, I thought it might be fun to share one of it's earliest coins. One than predates the United States Mint in San Francisco but still produced under US authority. Have a look at this beauty:

About the round:

This is not considered a coin because it was produced by a private company prior to the establishment of the United States Mint in San Francisco. Moffat and Company produced this gold masterpiece weighing 2.95 ounces, however it was only 88% pure gold. Although 10,000 were made only a few still exist. One recently sold for over $14 million dollars, not too bad a return from 1851.
San Francisco, California
The city was founded by the Spanish in 1776. Yes, the date is very significant since the United States signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4. But on this date Juan Bautista de Anza founded what is today considered San Francisco. It really is an amazing city, although recently marred by politics and homelessness . Our good friend lives in the area, and can attest to it's great climate!

If you are lucky enough to find one of these, you will be very rich as they go for $100K plus. With 2.5 ounces of Troy gold who wouldn't?
I hope you have a great day, and I appreciate all of your support!
