How much do you know about Hive? This is a question I asked myself recently after an experience that left me both afraid and enlightened at the same time. Sometimes we assume we understand a platform simply because we post regularly, interact with others, and claim our rewards. But do we really understand how everything works behind the scenes?
A few days ago, I mistakenly clicked on a scam link that has been circulating on the Hive platform. It was presented as a genuine program promising Hive coins airdrop. At first glance, it looked convincing. The design was clean, the message was attractive, and it appealed to that excitement many of us feel whenever we hear the word “airdrop.” But almost immediately after clicking, I realized something was wrong. The feeling was not right, and I knew I might have made a mistake.
Immediately I realized it was a scam, I reached out to some other Hive users. They were quick to respond and instructed me to change my password through the hive.blog site. To be honest, I didn't know about that before. I had never changed my master password since I created my account. It took me some time before I was able to figure it out and have the password changed. I was nervous throughout the process because I didn’t want to make another mistake while trying to correct the first one.
But that was not the end about my ignorance on the Hive platform.
The password changing experience happened a day ago, but the next day when I checked on my Keychain app to claim pending rewards, I saw a pop-up message that said my keys had been changed, and that if I was not the one who did it, I should contact a Discord server to report the case and get help. My heart skipped. I was confused and afraid. I couldn’t find the Discord server mentioned, and my mind immediately went back to the scam link. I thought maybe the scammer had gained access to my account and changed my keys.
Since I could not locate the Discord server, I posted a thread asking people about it to know why the keys had been changed. That was when I got to know that changing the master password of a Hive account automatically generates a new set of keys for the account. That information alone calmed me down. From the enquiry thread I made, I was informed by experienced Hive users on how to get the new keys and set up my account again on the Keychain app.
Ecency made it easier for me to get the keys. After logging in with my new master password, I obtained the private keys and set up my Keychain app again before I was able to claim my pending rewards. It felt like I was learning Hive all over again from the beginning.
We learn every day, and when you think you know much, you will find out that you actually know nothing yet. I have been on this chain for over a year now, yet there are a lot of things I still don't know about. I believe there are many people like me on this chain who use the platform daily but do not fully understand how keys, passwords, and security truly work.
One thing I am happy about is that there are always people ready to help you when you feel lost. The Hive community is not just about posting and earning; it is also about guidance and support. The good news about the whole experience is that I gained back full control of my account, and I will not need to worry about the scam link I mistakenly clicked on.
So I ask again, how much do you really know about Hive?
