I'm here again today on this amazing platform to share with you some vital information regarding why it is very important to make sure you always keep your bird's litter clean.
Before I went deep on this write up, I will like you all to first understand what litter or bedding means in poultryfarm business.
Litters or bedding in poultryfarm business are those materials used to cover the top floor of your bird's pen. These materials are always a very good absorbent and they give comfort to the birds, keep the birds warm and also absorb the water coming from their feces.
There are different materials used for litters or bedding in poultryfarm business and that's depends on your choice or what is available in your area. Example of litter materials are sawdust, wood shavings, rice hull, peanuts hull, papers, sands, shredded sugar cane and so on...
When it's comes to broiler farming which can also be referred to as meat production in poultryfarm business, keeping the bird's bedding or litter dry is very important to attain a good production. It can be very dangerous to the health of birds if there is water leakages or if water spill to the litter or bedding where the birds are occupied.
How harmful is wet bedding or litter to the birds?
Like I said earlier, wet bedding or litter can cause a great havoc to the birds health and can leads to unproductive in the poultryfarm business.
Below are some of the things that could happen if the bird's bedding or litter is wet:
Wet Litter: Whenever water gets into the litter, it makes it wet and this can lead to harmful germs like bacteria grow in the bird's pen which can cause sickness to the chickens.
Smell Of Ammonia: When the litter becomes wet, it usually produces a very bad odour or smell called ammonia which is not good for the bird's health. If the bird's is allowed to breath in too much of ammonia smell, it can leads to the birds having difficult in breathing which could later leads to chronic respiratory disease (CRD) which could give rise to mortality rate among the birds if proper measure is not taken.
- Slow Growth And Foot Problem: Most times, broilersbird are known for foot problems and one of the major causes of this foot problems is the germs that grow from the wet bedding or litter.
And moreso, wet bedding could caused the birds not to eat as they should due to difficulty in breathing which caused by smell of ammonia from the wet bedding or litter in the bird's pen. Since poultry farmers rely on the birds to eat properly to gain appropriate weight, not being able to eat as they should could leads to loss of weight and slow their growth in the process by affecting productivity and also increase cost of production.
To prevent these problems mentioned above in your poultryfarm business, it is very important for you as a poultry farmers to make sure that there is no water leakage or spillage onto the floor of your bird's pen.
And finally make sure to fixed any water leakages in your bird's pen and use a good water absorbent materials for your litter or bedding in poultryfarm. Taking care of these things will help you to keep the chickens healthy and have good production.
