An Overview of Digital citizenship
Digital citizenship has to do with the responsible use of the internet technology. The the development of the internet technology has made it possible for its users to virtualize human activities using using digital devices. From the wake of web1 (user activity = read only) to web2 (user activity = read and write only) to web3 (user activity = read, write and own), we have seen the internet technology evolve, deepening its use cases and possibilities. Now, people can reach out to and share resources with their family and friends at different parts of the world at the same time from the comfort of his room.

Going deeper, the wake of the blockchain and cryptocurrency technology of web3 has revolutionized work. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has become the focal subject of discourse and it places a demand on humans to up-skill in order to be relevant are work and in business. This is because one man can write a program, develop an AI device or robot for use in thousands of locations. Many people are taking up a career or two in tech and everyone are going online to do one thing or the other.
Today, career jobs have shifted from traditional positions to "content creator, cryptocurrency trader, social media Influencer, etc". The influx of people getting in to secure their space in the digital world calls for education on the etiquettes bothering the use of the internet technology and engaging the online community, hence, the concept of DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP.
Digital citizenship encompasses a set of principles, norms, and practices that individuals should follow when using digital tools and engaging in online activities. Digital citizenship is a necessity in today's interconnected world to ensure the safety, respect, and productivity of the user of the online environment.
There are Nine basic components of digital citizenship and are captured in different words by different authors depending on context. For the purpose of this post, the key aspects of digital citizenship would be described as: Online Safety, Online Etiquette (Netiquette), Critical Thinking and Media Literacy, Digital Footprint, Copyright and Fair Use, Privacy and Security, Responsible Online Communication, Digital Health and Wellbeing, and Digital Citizenship Education.
