Gold sovereigns are a type of coin that were first minted in 1489 during the reign of King Henry VII of England. They were originally made of 23-carat gold and were used as a means of payment in England and other parts of the British Empire.
The design of the gold sovereigns has changed over the years, with various monarchs and historical events being featured on the coin. One of the most famous designs is the 'St. George and the Dragon' design, which features the mythical figure of St. George slaying a dragon on the reverse side of the coin.
Gold sovereigns were used as a form of currency in many parts of the world, including the British Empire and countries such as South Africa and Australia. The coins were often used to pay soldiers and other government workers, and were also used in international trade.
In the early 20th century, many countries switched from the gold standard to the fiat currency system, which meant that gold sovereigns were no longer used as legal tender. However, the coins remain popular among collectors and investors, and are often traded as a form of bullion.
Some of the rarest and most valuable gold sovereigns include those minted in the early 20th century, such as the 1937 George VI proof sovereign, which is valued at over £100,000. Other rare sovereigns include those from the reign of Queen Victoria, which were produced in limited numbers due to a shortage of gold during the 19th century.
I do love a sovereign!!! I find them a very cheap way to invest in gold at little to NO premium. Ive manage to buy most of my sovereigns for spot, direct from my local cash4gold/jewellers. Ive built up a good report up with them and call in once or twice a month to pick up what goodies they have kept for me.
It makes sense for both of us. I get gold at spot, and they get to maximise their profits by not having to sell on to a refinery below spot..... With gold prices climbing month on month, "grandmas" gold coins are turning up more regularly as people cash in on these all time highs.
