Coins, bank notes, gold, silver and other precious metals have played a huge role in shaping the stories of our lives. But its not just the intrinsic value of an item that makes it important or historic. New technologies, new designs, an error in the making or just sheer beauty can all compound to make an item irreplaceable and iconic.
In this series of posts, ill cover some of the coins and items that first got me stuck in the downward spiral of what is affectionately known as "stacking" and share with you fine folks the significance and role theyve played in history.
Following the death of his father, King George V, it was up to his first vorn son, Edward VIII, to take his place on the throne and become King of England. Once Edward VIII had taken the throne, any newly minted coins and banknotes would have the new King’s side profile emblazoned on them, as is tradition. The 1937 Edward VIII 3d coin represents a unique and historically significant event. Edward VIII ascended to the throne as King of the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth in January 1936, but he abdicated in December 1936, after less than a year on the throne, to marry Wallis Simpson, a divorcée.
The 1937 Edward VIII 3d coin is an extremely rare coin. It was never officially released for circulation as King Edward VIII abdicated before the coin could be mass-produced. As a result, only a small number of patterns or prototypes were minted, making it a highly sought-after coin among collectors. The fact that the 1937 Edward VIII 3d coin was never issued for circulation and represents a brief reign of a monarch who abdicated adds to its historical curiosity and intrigue. This can make it particularly appealing to collectors who are interested in unusual or offbeat coins with interesting stories or historical backgrounds.
Due to its rarity, the 1937 Edward VIII 3d coin is not commonly found in the numismatic market, and obtaining one can be challenging. This limited availability and the resulting high demand among collectors can drive up its value and desirability.
I struggled to find any for sale currently, which just shows me how scarce these coins are. I found a few that had sold over the years and the price these coins sell for shocked even me:
The fact that these coins were never released in to circulation, the fact that Edward Viii went against royal protocol by having his effigy face the same way(left) as his father as apposed to the opposite way as tradition dictates, the fact that they very rarely come up for auction, all adds to making this coin my pick of the week.
