In the old days, when I was a young lad, the S class was the top of the range Mercedes, taking on
BMWs 7 series, Audis A8, Lexus’s LS and Jaguars XJ. Basically the pinnacle of motoring back in the day (if they don’t include Rolls, Bentley and Maybach).
But times have changed and so have people choices of cars. People these days have given up their saloon cars and changed over to an off-roader, which the Range Rover was the king of, until recently.
S class owners have changed to the GLS
BMW 7 series have the x7
Audi gives us the Q7/8 and so on.
Many people these days, dream of having an SUV, and the one I will focus on is the GLS.
A few months ago, my friend picked up a beautiful 2021 GLS450 a few months ago, and he loves it. It sits nicely between his 2 2020 INFINITI QX80s, and it got my mind thinking, how much can I buy a cheaper alternative for.
In the Uk, the GLS400d starts off at just under £80,000, as in places like Russia they start from just under 90k.
| Car | Currency | Hive |
|---|---|---|
| GLS400d | £80,000 | 225,617 |
| GLS400d | £90,000 | 253,819 |
Anyway, I will focus on the UK market.
The third-generation GLS has been out since 2020 and I really like its style, and the interior is amazing.
The cheapest GLS (of the third generation) starts at £70,872 for a 2020 GLS400d, which looks the part and it'ss done about 6700 miles. It's quite a big drop in what is likely to be a 6-month-old car (almost £10,000).
What could I buy for £10000?
Well, before the GLS was known by that name, there was the GL. It’s a great looking Modern luxury SUV. In fact, you can easily buy one for 10k as they start off at 5.5k for a 2007 version. It won’t be the best choice. Remember to buy the best you can.
I personally would buy a car nearer to 10 grand. It should really have Full Mercedes Service history and low miles. There is a 2007 GL320CDi for £10K with only 75K miles on the clock.
If the GL is too old for you, or you have a bit more to spend, from £28,700 you can buy the second generation GLS. If you don’t mind having the last generation interior, it will fool your neighbours any day. It’s a brilliant looking car.
The second Generation starts at about £28K.
Which car would you buy?
