Today, I want to talk about an old MK3 Ford Escort, which seems to be coping with the Russian winter.
This car here belongs to a friend of men, who has many classic cars. I need to ask him if I can film some soon :)
The car here is a 1981 1.3GL. It's nice to film older cars, as they are very simple and easy to show people around, unlike the wonderful spaceships we have these days, with computer screens all over the place.
The Mk3 was produced from 1980 till 1986, and was available in 3 or 5 door hatchbacks, a 3 or 5 door estate, a van or a convertible. So there were quite a few variants back then...
If you wanted a saloon, you had to buy the Ford Orion. I preferred the Escort versions thou.
There were a few places where these cars were built
| City | Country |
|---|---|
| Halewood | England |
| Almussafes | Spain |
| Saalouise | Germany |
| São Bernardo do Campo | Brazil |
There were many choices of Engines back then too (before Diesel became the, 'in' thing).
| Engine Size | Name | Layout of Cylinders |
|---|---|---|
| 1.1L | Valencia | Inline 4 |
| 1.1L | CVH | Inline 4 |
| 1.3L | CHT | Inline 4 |
| 1.6L | CHV | Inline 4 |
| 1.6L Turbo | CHV | Inline 4 |
There was also a choice of a Diesel
| Engine Size | Name | Layout of Cylinders |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L | LT | Inline 4 |
There were also 3 choices of transmissions
| Gears | Name | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 4-Speed | BC4 | Manual |
| 5-Speed | BC5 | Manual |
| 3-Speed | ATX | Automatic |
The 3rd version of Ford Escort was almost called the Erika. There was so much pressure (from the UK) to keep the Escort name!!! Some say, that Erika wasn't used, because the Germans were a concern, as it was the name of their battle march.
If you want to see more of the Ford Escort, please feel free to watch my in-depth tour video :)
