It's Spring Bank Holiday Weekend here in the UK, and what better adventure than to all jump into Lady Dorothy and see if we can gain some traction on our Mk2 Golf GTI that has been sitting in limbo for the last 8 months...
We had kind of surmised that where she was wasn't really going to plan, meaning - over this last week - Ben and I had been sourcing a restorer to bring her back to her former glory.
We arrived there just after lunch, and awaited the arrival of the specialist. As you will see from the short video, she is not in the best condition, and we didn't quite know what to expect.
We knew for a fact that the gent had undertaken some rather special projects - for example, Mini's, Mk1 Golfs, Audi Coupes etc. - so there was a fair chance he would take it on.
The specialist arrived, and we had already removed the cover, and we were ready and waiting for him to start his inspection. A joy to us was the fact that he was happy to come up and visit us on a Sunday as it would give him a chance to give his car a run out. So how surprised were we when he turned up on a Yamaha bike! His Mk2 Escort has a black interior, and after 9 minutes of travelling up to meet us, he had to turn around and hop on his bike as he was far too hot - oh dear! 🤣 We don't have that problem in Lady Dorothy, as she has a cream leather interior (and we had all the windows down, lol!)
As soon as he arrived he sprung straight into action and hit the floor - checking sills, floors, arches, wings, general bodywork - you name it!
And now - we finally have some movement on the restoration of our Mk2 Golf - and it's good news!
He thinks she is in much better shape than he expected, as we asked him if he had seen a Mk2 Golf in such a deplorable state before, and he answered that he had seen way worse! Phew...
Weirdly, one side is far more rotten than the other, and will need roughly 40 hours of welding to make sound, but it's easily doable.
Our job now is to source some parts and some panels, and once she has been transported to his work unit, the restoration of ChickenPig will commence.
After that it's wiring the engine and tidying everything up ready for the MOT - luckily for us, this specialist used to be an MOT tester, so he will get her ready for being back on the road.
Hurrah! 😍😍😍❤️❤️🐔🐷
