Getting lost, my favourite activity when I go on a trip. Seriously, I don't think there hasn't been a trip, on which I haven't got lost, even when I was a newcomer in Mexico I got lost several times. One of those lost was in the area of Tepito, one of the most dangerous places in the CDMX. But since this country is already my place of residence, I don't think it would count as getting lost in a foreign country. That is why I am going to go back to that time I got lost on the other side of the Atlantic, in a beautiful country called Italy.
On another occasion I had already mentioned to you that I spent more than a month travelling around Europe, during that time I travelled through various countries by car, train, walking and by boat. In almost no country we took tours, except when we had the brilliant idea to cross the Strait of Gibraltar and end up in Morocco, where I almost got lost. Luckily that time the guide brought me back to the group, otherwise I don't think I would be writing to you today, hahahaha. But that's a story for another post.
When trying to travel around the “old continent” on our own, my ex and I got lost practically everywhere. Even doing the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James), where there are signposts everywhere and a lot of people going to the same point. The two funniest occasions where we got lost were in France and Italy, in both we got to pay tolls because instead of getting to our hotels. We ended up practically going to another city, in Italy we even got stopped by the police because we were driving the wrong way. In the end, we took those experiences quite humorously.
We got lost many more times, many more. But the one I am going to tell you about today is one of the worst experiences I had on that trip. This happened in the city of Rome, on our last night there. By some strange coincidence of life, a great friend of both of us was also travelling in Italy, and we went out for a few beers with him before continuing our trip. We finished a little late, but luckily we still managed to take the subway to get to our hotel, which was in the downtown area of Rome.
Maybe taking the subway was not the wisest thing to do in those circumstances, the city changes a lot at night, plus with a few beers on us, it was quite difficult to find our way out. So we ended up lost inside the subway station, we went around a lot, until we finally found the exit, but in our lost time we realised that two men had begun to follow us. Unfortunately for us, the exit we arrived at was not the one that left us almost in front of our hotel, so we had to walk in the wee hours of the morning looking for our location. And yes, the two guys were still following us.
Honestly, I thought I was going to end up missing, robbed and other nastier things. We had no idea where we were and there were very few people on the street, so we started walking faster and faster until we miraculously managed to find a policeman. He helped us and I think he saw us very scared because he walked us about five blocks to the door of our hotel. Luckily, the moment we found the policeman, the two guys who were following us stopped and went back the way they came.
To this day, I don't understand how we could get lost in such a way. Since then, we try not to take the subway at night any more and if we went out for dinner or a drink at night, we went to a place close to our hotel that we could easily walk to.
Lost in a foreign country
