Entertaining isn't my strong point which is partly due to not enjoying cooking very much and that my guy and I are very private people who mostly prefer our own company to that of others.
It doesn't mean we don't entertain or see friends though, we do, but it's not something we do all that much and even more rarely at home; we like to keep our space private and feel a little intruded upon when people come over. That said, we have some amazing friends and enjoy seeing them from time to time.
A while ago I met the new partner of my guy's best friend and we got along really well from the first moment. Since then I've spent a lot more time with her and along the way we decided to do an "event" lunch or dinner together for the four of us and to make it something special each time. We agreed four times a year was frequent enough and not too long ago the fourth event, a lunch, took place.

We set a budget to work to but try to make it something special which means we make foods we might not usually make, have a theme and usually dress up for the occasion. The events are always at my house as we have more room here than the other couple and each occasion has been really nice...except for that time she and I burned dinner to a crisp. What we ended up eating was nice, it's just that someone else made it because we had to order in. I told you I wasn't a good cook and neither is my friend; the guys don't complain though, at least not in front of us girls.
We have fun putting the menu together and doing the shopping which always seems to take us so long, and we love to make the table look beautiful...of course, we always make sure the table doesn't look more beautiful than ourselves.
We had a nautical theme this time so the food was from the ocean, although we had to have garlic bread or the two guys might have thrown a tantrum, and the table setting had a lot of blue on it; it all looked really nice and my friend and I managed to find mermaid dresses to wear as well. Not really, we just called them mermaid dresses because of the nautical theme and the guys didn't dare argue.
I think we did pretty well for a couple of pretend mermaids. The food was good, the company was good and we had a fun time and us two mermaids even managed to avoid the cleaning up; we had two strong capable men who did that, even though they tried to avoid it initially.
It's a lot of fun and for us to do this and it's brought the two of us closer, she's a great girl, and for both couples, who don't like to have a lot of people around all the time, it's a nice event a few times a year to connect, enjoy each other's company and have some fun.
