First, it's the toughest thing to make a thumbnail for such a topic. Second, since I have already talked a lot about my passions and love controversy topics, this was for take my take. Third, let get to it!
The first time I was challenged by an exercise of thought about euthanasia was during a class in college. We had a handout with a reading about someone who was declared dead but was still somehow alive. You know the state. It's that time when we are more relates to a vegetable than other thing.
It was an interesting conversation because a lot of my classmates where against the idea of removing this fictional person from life support. However, this isn't actually akin to euthanasia. The person is already dead. The body is just doing some things while being assisted.
Last year, we had an interesting case of this in Colombia. A person suffering from chronic pain for some condition almost got her wish granted by having the laws give her the green light on this. It was too good to be true. The process was suspended for one reason was simple. She wasn't terminally ill. However, she suffers every day. And not like us with existencial dread and petty pains.
And I get it. The tenants of religion forbade people from going away easily. We all miss suffer the same kind of misery. If your misery is greater, then you are a chosen of your sick deities. Your suffering entertains them enough that you shouldn't try to stop it, lest you want to face eternal damnation.
Damnation sound better this suffering for no reason.
I'll cut the chase and say that I'm pro euthanasia. The reason is simple. When animals get too old or too sick, we give them that mercy. Why would be given the same mercy upon our kin?
The debate is the same as with abortion. There's a whole spectrum of consideration to give women the right tk abort. However, it ends up being a choice. It's a choice made after deep thought or considering the circumstances. Euthanasia works in the same way.
The extra catch around here is that it needs to be evaluated. Gone are the days of glorious death. But we can give people the chance to die in their own terms.
I would also like to add that I understand the dangers of having such a measure become completely legal everywhere. A lot of people could to an claim their right to die even when conditions are not met.
I have friend who talked to me about this. She said she was tired of living and she would try to find the way to apply for euthanasia. It was ridiculous in a sense, since she is physically ok. However, she's been miserable since she migrated. It's a mix of homesickness and other factors playing on her mind. And she was telling me this, I could only afford to advise her to go to therapy. I can't tell how much she could be suffering, but maybe talking with s a professional could help her.
I haven't talked to her in a long time. But I know she's still alive, so there's that. I think the idea of giving people that merciful end comes tied to the fact of having the prospect of a very slow and painful demise. If there's no cure for your disease, I think you have the right to decide your fate. Let's not romanticize suffering for the sake of faith or any other weird ideas about life.
However, as I see thing transpire with us humans, the whole deal will go south in no time. I can see a lot of problems arising from having such rights. Not because of protests against it. There could be a lot said towards preserving life. I think that until we are a lot smarter than we currently are, we shouldn't be given that kind of power. We already do a lot of damage with the things we know. Imagine if euthanasia were legal everywhere. I could see the ends of our species.
...and if it were to happen because we were too dumb to keep ourselves going instead of taking and "easier" way, well, maybe we deserve some help ending our time of this planet. If not for our own good, for the good of the ecosystem.
