The right tools makes the job easier. It also helps you make it better. In this week's #weekend-engagement, I have the chance to show some of my tools and the projects I make. But there's plenty of topics to choose thanks to the totally awesome G-dog.
I'm a luthier. My projects are musical instruments and this is just a bit of the tools I own and have acquired thanks to HIVE and instrument's sell.
Plane
This is the only tool that's an heirloom. It belonged to my great grandfather. He was a shipwright. So it's cool the tool has found new use. I needed to work on it since the sole was curved. I bet it was so since the work on ships is different. But I needed to straighten it for flattening pieces.
It helps a lot that shavings look great! And the whistling sound of a sharp plane is one of the best things ever. Using the plane helps not only to flatten, but reduce some of the pieces. It is a necessary tool.
Hack Saw
This was the first took I bought after my first sale. It is an adjustable hack saw. You can work of the tension on the blade according to the needs of your work. I broke one of the blades by having too much tension on it. It was a rookie mistake.
This is part of my work on it. Cutting the kerfing is quick and easi with the saw. But it is also a heavy duty tool. So it can cut metal without too much trouble.
Router and bits
This is one of the newest tools. A router helps to make clean and straight cuts. But you can make other kind of cuts with other bits. So I might experiment with some of the bits to get other kinds of work.
You can make dove tails and else. So maybe boxes and other kind of woodworking in my future. For now the straight and repeating bits help me trim some of the excess material.
It's also a great help to make designs like this. But you need to be careful. What I can say about my router that's a problem is that it didn't come with the trimming attachment. That sucks, but what can I say. I'll need to make one. Or I could mount it on table to have s routing table.
Fine files and card scraper
These tools are awesome to do fine jobs. The files are the newest tools of my collection. The first previous head stock was worked with these files after routing. But it will be used to make bridges too.
The scraper is used to work of the finish of the pieces and save some sandpaper. The thing works like a plane but in a less aggressive scale. I use in backs and sound boards for thicknessing the material. That's also a work of listening till you get the desired voicing in the part.
These are just some of the tools I use in my work. There's plenty more, but these are my favorite. W
