It is worth noting that for some time now I have been dissatisfied with the government because of the policies it has implemented over the past few years; I don’t know if this means rebelling, because in reality I disagree with the vast majority of injustices that we ordinary Venezuelans have endured, or rather, the people who have suffered and gone through many hardships, from shortages of food, petrol and electricity to pay cuts for public sector workers – not to mention the disaster this has caused the country.
Furthermore, it’s by no means easy to speak out, because last year and in previous years, you couldn’t express an opinion or protest against the government without the security forces immediately turning up, arresting you without any rights, accusing you of terrorism and incitement, and sending you to prison for several years. But this year, things have changed: the president was arrested and the vice-president has now taken over, which is practically the same thing, although several people have been released.
Over a month ago, I took part in a protest with a group of teachers to demand a pay rise, because we haven’t had a pay rise for over four years now. It’s a way of asserting our rights as public sector professionals, because I earned my current position through competitive examination and years of study; I don’t hold a political office. I’ve spent years preparing myself through my studies, and it is we who are training the country’s future professionals.
To conclude, what is needed is for all of us workers to agree on a day of general strike to see if this government will respond to the situation we workers are facing.
I hope you liked it, see you in a next post.
