The weekend has arrived with a new set of topics for the Weekend Engagement. And as this weekend is shaping up to be quite busy for me, I'm going to take the chance to answer the call, today. When in my side of the world, it's still Friday afternoon.
This week, I will choose to answer question 2. Why? Because I'm not in the mood for the other two questions. I wouldn't want to know if I only have 250 minutes more to live. And therefore, I'm not going to think about it. And the world in 250 years, I need more time to think about this.
So, going to the one I chose:
2️⃣ Found $250
You find $250 in cash on the sidewalk. There's no one close by to claim it, so you bend over and pick it up. What do you do next? Hand it to the authorities or pocket it? If you decide to keep it what do you do with the money, how do you spend it, and why? If you decide to hand it in to the authorities what's behind that decision?
My answer is given from the point of view of someone living in Venezuela. Who finds the money on its streets.
So let's say that one afternoon while coming back from my daily walk, I see a paper wrapper on the sidewalk that looks like money. I bend down to take it. If it doesn't look like money, I wouldn't take it and probably ignore it.
To my surprise, not only is it money, but my gosh, I can't believe I found $250. And I think it is my lucky day. And I will hope it wasn't the wage of someone who lost it along the way. But without hesitation, I will put it in my wallet. I will have no moral dilemma as to whether I should give it to the authorities.
If I were to give it to some authority, the chances of that money going from my pocket to that authority's are 100%. The money will never return to the person who lost it.
If you lose any amount of cash somewhere here, you can write it off as lost.
By the time I get home. I'll be already convinced it was unlikely to be the money of someone who needed it much or would have been more careful with it.
That night I will likely invite my husband and son to dine out and treat ourselves. Like a sushi night, for example.
I would also probably use some money to fix something at home, the kind of things that get forgotten when other spending priorities come up.
And I would certainly look to generously help some of the people close to me who I know are in need.
If I found a wallet or a mobile phone instead of cash? Would my response be different? Yes and no.
In terms of handing it over to the authority, It wouldn't be different. I wouldn't go to the police to deliver it. But I would do everything I could to contact the person who lost it. And if there was some money in the wallet. I wouldn't touch it.
This is my entry to this week's Weekend-Engagement (WE94) Thank you for another good topic to write about.
Thank you very much for reading
