I always judge a book by its cover. Apart from the blurb on the back, it’s how I choose in a bookshop. I’m much the same with people. I can usually tell at a glance how tedious or otherwise someone is likely to be. I find that those who look a little quirky or offbeat tend to be more interesting, and, funnily enough, they are exactly the sort of people I attract. If there’s a nutter in the room, rest assured, they will gravitate towards me.
What particularly repels me is malodorous people, and I don’t mean the unwashed. I’m referring to those who douse themselves in so much product you can smell them at a hundred metres. And that’s just the men. During the Covid nonsense, when we were encouraged to stand three metres apart, I found myself wishing it were six.
A young man had the gall to take the seat beside me on the bus the other day, reeking so strongly of perfume that my clothes were infused with the stench and I could still smell him at bedtime...Eau de Calvin Bloody Klein, or some other horrendously expensive concoction.
Whatever happened to the clean, faint scent of lavender soap?
I say "horrendously expensive" with some authority, having recently been forced to purchase 100ml of Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia for my brother-in-law, in return for his sterling defence of the homestead while we sunned ourselves in Mexico. It cost $125 — and that was duty-free. Not that I begrudged the little bugger his scented water. I’d have bought him ten bottles for the sake of a holiday.
Another thing I find particularly repulsive is people who speak over me. It's intolerable when they insist on talking while I’m trying to interrupt.
