I’ve never been afraid of failure. I don’t give it a second thought. Perhaps it’s a result of laissez-faire parenting or having always been self-employed, but when the buck stops with you, failure is not an option
My father made it clear to us that we shouldn't expect anything from him and that what we wanted we'd have to earn for ourselves. When the only option is success you're inclined to go that extra mile to achieve it. You'll think outside the box, bend the rules and swim against the stream. When I commit to something I give it one hundred percent and fully expect to succeed. The only question is how great a success I'll be.
When I started a legal agency in the 1980s the business was all sewn up by two dusty old companies that'd been around for 100 years. Advertising was frowned upon and considered vulgar so we sent a diary to every solicitor in Ireland with our contact details beautifully embossed on the front.
If you know anything about the legal profession you'll know that they're a bunch of penny-pinching misers who wouldn't spend Christmas and we got loads of calls ordering extra free diaries. And this wasn't any old diary. Oh no! This was top of the range, customised with the Legal List on the first two pages, a must-have for every solicitor
Come January 1984, all over the country, thousands of solicitors were strutting around with our diaries under their sweaty arms. Yes, it cost us a fortune but it got people talking. And you know what they say, there's only one thing worse than being talked about, and that's not being talked about. We ended up as the largest agency firm in the country.
And thus, my dear reader, my advice is never to contemplate failure and always to give 100%. Unless you're donating blood of course.
