I wasn't used to nicknaming people but I couldn't help it last year. While serving, I had a friend who always spoke to a girl on the phone. The only thing I heard coming from her end is laughter, she never speaks for a minute without laughing in-between conversation. It wasn't the usual soft laughters, it was deep and somehow it sounds funny, unconsciously I laugh listening to her laughters. I did not know the girl in person, but I recognized it was her each time they spoke, with her heavy and funny laughter that always sneaked out of his phone's speaker.
"I didn't hear you speak with uhmm, that girl laughing gas" I told him one morning and that was how the nickname came about. He laughed uncontrollably when those words came out of my mouth as if he had wanted to nickname her the exact words. I didn't have to explain, he knew who I was referring to, he just answered me and that was how we gave her the nickname but we never called her that directly, we used it as a code among the guys even though there were few times it slipped out of my mouth while she was with him but ensured she never knew it was her.
There was a time my friend called me while he was at her place. I did not know the phone was on the loud speaker and I asked him if he was at the laughing gas's place. She heard the name, and quickly asked who I was referring to, guys always have a way of covering up wrongs. Suddenly, a story just came out of his head and we used what I was referring to. I later learned her name is Irene but I was more convenient with calling her Laughing Gas instead of her real name.
