This last weekend I needed to have some time in the garden, it had been a long week and Saturday seemed as good a day as any to appreciate the greenery a little bit. Everything got watered and it looked so happy afterwards, as if the water had immediately perked up all the plants.
While looking around a bit I noticed how many accidental plantings there have been. Most of the plants weren't purchased. Rosemary was gifted by a friend. The pepper plant came from seeds that my niece planted from a whole, discarded pepper. The strawberries have put out numerous runners and are making new plants and I have tomatoes that germinated from kitchen scraps.
The Frangipani below was from a piece of a plant that I found had broken off the main tree and was lying on the ground. I've just managed to root a second piece that I found in a similar way many months later. I believe that I have one pink one and one yellow one now.
And then of course I'm always experimenting with what I can take cuttings from that will root. I recently took a cutting from a trellis that had a really pretty ivy type looking plant wrapping it's way up and that has sprouted many roots and impatiently waiting for me to put it's feet in soil, but I'm a bit scared that when I do it's going to shoot up so fast and I won't know what to train it to. It's in my windowsill at the moment.
After watering everything on Saturday, I still needed more green inspiration so I went to the plant section of the local hardware store to have a look around. I found another creeper that I simply WANT! It's called the Snail Vine and you can see it in the middle image of the picture above. Can you see why they are called that? I was however not entirely convinced that I want it enough to warrant paying the price tag on it. It's really pretty but at that price, it's not coming home with me. It's quite unusual and not something I've seen there before. I'm always looking for intriguing plants that are different.
I settled on buying the bare essentials; some potting soil for my inside plants which need dividing and I was given a succulent as a free gift as part of a promotion thingy - Happy me! I left with a big smile on my face, I never say no to free plants.
So even though I don't have much space to dedicate to my foliage addiction, I am always on the lookout of ways that I can have more plants in an inexpensive way. I've never come across a plant swap here but I'm sure they happen, maybe it's something to look into soon.
So that was how I spent my Saturday to revitalise my heart and soul just a little bit.
What did you get up to in the garden this weekend?
