The 28th of October is a big national holiday in Greece and all the museums and archeological sites are open to the public, for free. So I took the opportunity to visit the castle that I see every morning, the last seven months but I haven't been inside for more than a year!
So I left the busy roads of the town just before the beginning of the student parade and climbed the 200 meters (around 650 feet) of the Palamidi hill. The town is Nafplio, Greece's first capital and it is full of history and memories!
The weather was brilliant and the view of the old town just wonderful! In the picture above you can see almost all my world, for the last half of the year. The beach that I go for my daily swim, on the left, the pedestrian footpath around the peninsula, the port and the old town itself! A charming little place to live one day after another in a predictable and calm way.
I mentioned the student parade before and you might wonder what kind of holiday that is. Well it is not very easy for a foreigner to understand it but we are celebrating our involvement in World War II. And if you are also wondering why we are celebrating the beginning and not the end of a war, I am afraid that I can't give you a comprehensible answer. It would take an in depth analysis into the psyche of the Greeks which is not the purpose of this post or my intention altogether.
Actually my intention is to simply illustrate a beautiful Saturday morning (yesterday) and respond to the writing suggestions placed by in the Weekend-Engagement topics: WEEK 177.
It took me one hour and a half to find myself back to the entrance having seen a fair amount but not the entire castle. It would take quite a few hours to fully explore it but I am living so close that I can hope for more opportunities in the future :)
Thank you for reading and if you want to know more about me you can check out my introduction post.
