Every year, on the Pentecost holiday, many castles in the Netherlands opening there doors for visiting! This day of the castle is very popular in the Netherlands, because there also some castles who are in private hands and are normally not open for visiting! And who doesn't wan to see a castle from the inside that normally isn't open?
This year I went to castle Loenersloot! An estate in a small village in between the city's of Utrecht and Amsterdam!
The castle is mentioned for the first time in the year 1258! They think that the only thing that was standing there was the big defense tower! Probably the first defense line to protect the city of Amsterdam!
In the 14th and the 15th century they build more living areas around the castle tower!
The entrance isn't a draw bridge like in the movies! They probably renovated it some time when it didn't have to be used as a defense castle!
There were so many people inside that it was hard for me to take some nice pictures! And a lot of areas were of limits because the were rented out as office space to different company's!
A small impression of the original kitchen! Again, so many people crowded in this space that it was difficult to take pictures there!
If you were lucky, you could go up in the tower! Only 6 people were allowed there at one time! And when you are traveling alone, I easily could hook up with the family of 5 and skip the line that way!
The staircase was so incredible narrow that I immediately understood why there were only 6 allowed at one time! It was just 4 bricks wide!
The upper level has got shooting holes for defending the tower!
The view was pretty nice! one side looked at the small town around the castle!
The other sides looked straight over the lowlands to the city of Amsterdam!
Trough the attic of the living areas!
Back down a staircase full of paintings of all the people who have lived there!
In the basement were the displayed some stuff that the found in the water around the castle! And also the restoration of some ornaments of the castle!
And safe the best for last The gun room! Here they had the canon's and gun powder stored! They were not big but they did a good job! Until the year 1672 when the castle was conquered by the French! Luckily they didn't destroy the castle but the used it for there own good!
