Happy Sunday, Dear Hivers! I'm excited to participate in this week's contest hosted by our dear moderator, . I choose the topic of social media because it resonates with me the most.
Being born as a Gen Z baby, i experienced the humble beginning of social media which changed the lives of most people. When I was in elementary, my first mode of communicating with friends is through telephones. I still remember having a small notebook containing the telephone numbers of my friends in school. On holidays or weekends, i spend my time either watching TV or talking to my friend in the telephone while eating macaroni spaghetti. Life was so simple back then.
In my early teens, we started using Friendster and Yahoo Messenger as a mode of communication. Exchanging Yahoo emails and chatting to random strangers were quite normal back in the day. I wasn't able to use Friendster quite often though because i was in a phase where I dreaded taking photos.
Then high school came together with the start of the popularity of Facebook. I also had my first Nokia phone during that time. In this era, my friends and I were quite vain, trying to capture every memories created. Of course, the memories wouldn't be complete without landing a post in Facebook. I remember being so glued in my phone and Facebook notification was my dopamine boost. Getting a hundred likes on my photos would make me so happy. Life was still simple back then.
Until my Facebook account got hacked. It's like my whole world was gone. I tried retrieving it, but to no avail. It simply was gone forever. It was then that I realized that creating a life outside the internet is so much more important than what's in our social media. Having a private and peaceful life is a lot better too.
Right now, I honestly see social media platforms as unsafe. Issues like identity thief, cyber bullying, and fake news, are ever present in today's mainstream social media. But we also have to acknowledge that it did a lot of good for businesses especially for marketing products and services. So my final take on social media is still in the affirmative side for as long as it is used properly and cautiously.
That's it for today's blog. See you in my next one!
Sending some hugs and kisses
Love, Jane
