I scurried behind an abandoned trailer panting and almost out of breath. Instantly, I put my hands over my chest and nose. A futile attempt to quiet down my breathing and heartbeat. As I looked through the rearview mirror, I could see them. Vain, hollow and lifeless. Yet they carried an insatiable appetite for life. They would not stop until they make you one of their own. The air smelled putrid. Slimes from their skin littered the ground.
My heart skipped two beats as I panicked and thought about what to do. They had followed me from the west zone and were closing in on me. They could have been at least fifty. There was no way I was getting out of there alive if I didn't act fast. My heart sank as I bent my head. “This could be the end”. I thought. I looked at my empty hands. I had dropped the little supplies I managed to gather from the west of the city. It was my turn to go hunting. The north, east, and south had been barricaded by these deadly zombies.
Memories came flashing. I thought about the beautiful life I had before the pandemic. I saw my mother's hearty smile. I thought about the hustling and bustling of the city that has now become ruins and abandon. A level ‘A’ danger zone. Only shadows and grave silence filled the air now. A tear dropped from my cheek and landed softly on a crushed can of coke beside my feet.
Great! Quickly I picked up the can and threw it to the opposite side of the street. Like a swarm of bees hovering, they all dragged their lifeless bodies while growling in unison toward the sound of the can. I let out a sigh of relief.
I hurriedly gathered what little supplies I had and headed straight to our hideout occasionally dodging the flesh eaters. We call it the safe zone. It is where “we” the remaining survivors found refuge. It is heavily guarded by the strongest of us. We are hatching a plan
The year is 2022. After the global pandemic ravaged most parts of the world. The world leaders finally found a solution. A vaccine that would put an end to the spread of the disease for good. Citizens worldwide hurried to get dozes of the vaccine. Then it began to happen. The vaccinated started to turn. In their homes, schools, and offices. They began turning into something sinister and consuming the rest of the people with them. In less than six months, the world had become a cloud of wreckage covered in zombies all over.
Now, we are the surviving unvaccinated. We've managed to create a shelter out of safe spaces across cities. From time to time, we meet in the shadows and exchange intel. We are building a mega plan to eradicate these creatures forever and begin a new world order. The time is almost here. We send the best out there to hunt for food, weapons, Intel, and whatever they can to help in the battle that is to come. Man vs Zombie. We are the survivors and we are coming. I will be part of this revolution because I choose life. I choose to live in the hope of humanity.
This is my entry to the latest Weekend Engagement Challenge;
