Greetings Hive World!
Being a newbie and first time participating in the Weekend community, I find the topics for this week's #weekend-engagement very interesting and particularly more, option six. So I will write about it.
β¨Option six
Tell us about the first time you met your current partner - Where did you meet, was it a setup date or happenstance and was it instant attraction or did it rise slowly like the incoming tide? - If you like you may do a fictional story for this one, or post about the true story.
The day I first met my husband was like any other day until I met him again the second time, years later. Then the memory became indelible.
We attended the same one-year Remedial program in 2007. This is like a pre-university program for students who are unable to get direct admission into the universities. So instead of wasting a year at home awaiting admission, some students register for this program and at the end use the certificate to apply for admission.
One morning, I arrived early for lectures and reserved two seats for my friends by placing my notebooks on them. When the class was almost filled up, this rugged-looking classmate of mine π came and asked to sit on one of the reserved seats. What?!
I couldn't believe he would ask me to give up my friend's seat for him! Of course, I said no. We argued back and forth until my friends arrived. They laughed at both of us and shared the seats with him. Now do you understand the reason why I said earlier that our first meeting was not so memorable?
After this funny incident, we would only say "hello", "hi" to each other in class and that was it.
Fast forward to 2013 after my one-year compulsory national service, I was at the bus park to travel to Edo state and get my transcript from school. And there he was, looking ruggedly handsome. π
He saw me first and came close to say hello. Coincidentally he was also travelling to Benin in Edo state as well and that was how we travelled together. We sat beside each other, talked and laughed for the whole 5 hours. I confided in him about some issues I was going through while he asked whether or not I was seeing anyone.
We exchanged phone numbers on arrival at Benin and stayed in touch for the next six months. In those phone conversations and video calls, we expressed our interest and love for each other.
Then he visited me in Warri, Delta state and met my family informally. My family knew I was interested in someone but they did not know who until they saw him.
Another six months later, he came to formally ask for my hand in marriage. He also asked my uncle (because my Dad was late) and my mother for permission to marry me. The rest, they say, is history.
Now we are happily married and blessed with two sons who look just like him! Or me? π
Was it an instant attraction at first? No. My feelings for him started on our bus ride together because he was just so nice to me and a gentleman. Road travels can be exhausting because of our bad roads. So at one point, he asked whether I was tired and needed to stretch my legs. If yes, he would ask the driver to stop!
I was shocked because there were other passengers on the bus. He could not stop the bus for me alone but he assured me he would. He's that brave and bold when he needs to be and I appreciate that about him.
During one of our many talks, he confessed that his attraction to me was instant during the class seat argument. π He admired the way I stood up for my friends. He saw it as loyalty and respected me for it. Seeing me again years later at the bus park can only be fate.
