Wide awake, no time to waste by Martin Garrix feat. Bonn - No Sleep
Just like that lyric from Martin Garrix and Bonn, that’s my life in a nutshell if we never had to sleep.
Imagine you never had to sleep, what would you do with the extra time you gained? List some things and explain why you’d do them and how the extra time would impact your life.
This is my first time answering the weekend prompt and though it's late, I find that question quite intriguing as I finally have something to say. I read a few entries already and I think everyone has a great way to spend their time if they never had need to sleep.
If you're familiar with hustle culture, there is that notion that sleeping is useless and hindering your progress. Maybe I was just in a toxic crowd or something. But I was never used to sleeping too much. Only in recent years when I started slowing down and taking care of my health, I started sleeping like I am supposed to.
The longest I've been wide awake and functional was 3 and half days. Sometimes I want to break more records but as I age, that seems a bit impossible.
When I don't sleep for a day or two, it was just like most people would have imagined how to spend their time if they never had to sleep. I had my regular life but with extra time for reading books, being in different cities/countries, working more, learning languages. But because we don't live in a world where tired is out of the variable, After being awake for more than 24 hours, I usually sleep for 5 hours and sometimes 12 hours to pay those sleeping debts.
But what would I really do if sleep was no longer needed and we didn’t feel tired at all?
I would go to different library and finish every book in the place
With the assumption that I would still function the same, I definitely would spend it over at the library. I imagine that if the world didn't need to sleep, the library would open 24/7 too, at least where I live. I can stay there and read every book cataloged in that library. I mean now, at most If I stay at a library I can only read 2-3 books since they often tell me to go because the library would be closed by 5 PM.
I would just life my normal life but at faster pace
The only thing that hinders my progress at the moment is time and energy. So, if we no longer need sleep and never feel tired, I can finish all the things I have to do in a day instead of a week. My normal life is pretty busy and can be quite active. So instead of wasting 8 hours just to sleep, that's really extra time to find another extra hustle and workout too.
I would find more remote jobs
I love working and I can be the most workaholic person as long as it matches either my passion or the money. I can only imagine getting more money just by working extra instead like these days where I still need 8 hours of sleep.
I would not take any energy boosting supplements or nootropics.
Why do I need them when I won't feel tired? if we no longer sleep and don't feel tired anymore, there would be no nootropics specifically to boost our energy. On top of that, maybe caffeine won't be needed anymore and we won't need to drink coffee/tea to have that extra buzz. Maybe the energy drink industry wouldn’t exist too?
There are endless possibilities I can think of because even now, I hate how some things don't operate 24/7, how train stations don't operate 24/7, the same thing with stores and restaurants, even temples and tourist places. I would not have felt so alone walking at 2 AM or traveling around that hour because everyone would be awake and it would be just like day time.
There's one thing I wonder if sleep was no longer needed, how would we die?
Do we die by natural death? illness? Assited suicide with pods? (this already exists). Even in the US there’s nearly 100k drowsy driving crashes and about 800 fatalities. I reckon it’s even higher where I live. If sleep was no longer needed, we didn’t feel tired, we definitely remove that drowsy crashes and fatalities. Thus lowering our chances to die by accident. No sleep life is also a contributor to many illness hence probably lowering our chances of getting illness. Anyhow, that's why I asked that question.
