What was the best live concert you have been to and tell us what made it so special
I'm a fan of progressive rock with my favorite bands being Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Genesis, Rush, Camel, Focus, Gentle Giant and U.K.
In 1981, I was 13 years old and already obsessed with the band Yes ; Jon Anderson captivates with his countertenor voice that many have catalogued as angelic, Chris Squire with his bass with a rough and aggressive tone but that at the end sounded very melodic, Bill Bruford gave a touch of jazz to the group with that way of playing the drums, Peter Banks with rhythm guitar, his replacement Steve Howe, (a virtuoso of any type of guitar and even the mandolin that walks between blues, country, baroque and jazz), on the keyboards first Tony Kaye with a very crystalline and clean tone and then comes the virtuoso Rick Wakeman who arrived with a wealth of new ideas and technologies, providing that majestic sound that came out of his keyboards.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer were characterized by their grandiloquent rock, mastodóntico say many, his works were sensational epics that amalgamated rock and classical music with Keith Emerson, (virtuoso and spectacular keyboardist from the group The Nice), the bassist, guitarist and singer Greg Lake (formerly in the influential progressive rock group King Crimson), and the spectacular drummer Carl Palmer of the group Atomic Rooster.
U.K, is a group formed by singer and guitarist John Wetton, (King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Roxy Music, Wishbone Ash) and Bill Bruford, (former drummer of Yes, King Crimson and Genesis), along with violinist/keyboardist Eddie Jobson and guitarist Allan Holdsworth. The group possessed a striking sonority especially in the part of their synthesizer keyboards, highlighting Wetton's baritone voice.
Geoffrey Downes is a progressive rock keyboardist who in 1976 meets Trevor Horn with whom he forms the group The Buggles, famous for the Hit Video Killed the Radio Star, which already announced in a premonitory way the arrival of the MTV channel. Later these musicians joined the group Yes and recorded the album Drama, (one of the most criticized albums by Yes purists due to its commercial turn).
Going back to 1981, I remember being in my first year of high school and with my school friends we would go to the disco stores, from time to time we would buy a record, and many times we would be ecstatic looking at the covers of the imported albums, and what a surprise to discover among the shelves a record that included members of: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, King Crimson and The Buggles. The rock group was Asia as was their eponymous album. This was quite a supergroup: John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and Geoffrey Downes.
All a great progressive rock album much criticized for its musical direction towards commerciality and easy listening, as never before were progressive rock songs such as Only Time Will Tell, Heat of the Moment, and Wildest Dreams played so insistently on the radio. The album in general features spectacular drum solos by Carl Palmer, the undisputed sound and virtuosity of Steve Howe's guitar, a keyboard accompaniment that is very close to the New Wave sound, and the powerful voice of John Wetton. This debut album sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
In spite of all the criticisms to this day this album is a classic of progressive rock.
This group over the years had several line-ups and several albums, toured worldwide, several of their live concerts were released on video, and even a rarity as Asia in Asia where Greg Lake, (from Emerson, Lake & Palmer), replaces John Wetton as lead singer.
On May 26, 2011, in the amphitheater of the Sambil Shopping Center in the city of Caracas in Venezuela, the original line-up of Asia celebrates its 30 years of existence.

I remember that I had to go to this presentation alone since I didn't have money to buy two tickets, and on the other hand my wife doesn't like progressive rock, she is more of a pop fan.
The stage was very sober, not very spectacular, the amphitheater was half full, which I attribute to the high price of tickets and the serious economic situation that was beginning to be felt in my country, I bought my ticket in the third row, and the view of the stage was spectacular, I felt very close to the musicians.
The show began and John Wetton's voice was perceived with the same power as 30 years ago, the accompaniment on keyboards by Geoffrey Downes was superb, I spent the whole concert excited and with goose bumps.
I was an eyewitness to Steve Howe's mastery of both electric and classical guitar.

A drum solo by Carl Palmer that left me with my mouth open and my jaw unhinged, there reaffirmed my belief that this is one of the best drummers in the world.
The sound and acoustics turned out to be very good.
This concert like a time machine made me go back 30 years in time remembering great friends that due to destiny or work I haven't seen for a long time, I made a retrospective of how I saw life in my pre-adolescence, I laughed as I went through my mind all the stupid things I had done at that time.
Going back to the concert, I can say that I felt on cloud nine, very satisfied to see so much prodigy together, and also surprise, when leaving the concert I met one of my best friends from 30 years ago.
Sadly, John Wetton died in 2017, Carl Palmer is active with Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy group, Steve Howe and Geoffrey Downes are back with the group Yes.
I always wanted to see the group Asia live and that wish was granted, I regret not sharing that concert night with my wife, however, I established contact again to this day with that great lost friend.

En 1981, yo contaba con 13 años de edad y ya estaba obsesionado con el grupo Yes; Jon Anderson cautiva con su voz de contratenor que muchos han catalogado como angelical, Chris Squire con su bajo de tono áspero y agresivo pero que al final sonaba muy melódico, Bill Bruford le daba un toque de jazz al grupo con esa manera de tocar la batería, Peter Banks con guitarra rítmica, su reemplazo Steve Howe, ( todo un virtuoso de cualquier tipo de guitarra e incluso la mandolina que se pasea entre el blues, el country, el barroco y el jazz), en los teclados primero Tony Kaye con un tono muy cristalino y limpio y luego llega el virtuoso Rick Wakeman que llego con un caudal de nuevas ideas y tecnologías, aportando ese sonido majestuoso que salía de sus teclados.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer se caracterizaban por su rock grandilocuente, mastodóntico dicen muchos, sus obras eran epopeyas sensacionales que amalgamaba rock y música clásica con Keith Emerson, (virtuoso y espectacular tecladista proveniente del grupo The Nice), el bajista, guitarrista y cantante Greg Lake (anteriormente en el influyente grupo de rock progresivo King Crimson), y el espectacular baterista Carl Palmer del grupo Atomic Rooster.
U.K, es un grupo formado por el cantante y guitarrista John Wetton, ( King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Roxy Music, Wishbone Ash) y Bill Bruford, (ex batería de Yes, King Crimson y Genesis), junto a ellos el violinista/tecladista Eddie Jobson y el guitarrista Allan Holdsworth. El grupo poseía una sonoridad impactante sobre todo en la parte de sus teclados sintetizadores, destacando la voz de barítono de Wetton.
Geoffrey Downes es un tecladista de rock progresivo que en 1976 conoce a Trevor Horn con quien forma el grupo The Buggles, célebre por el Hit Video Killed the Radio Star, que ya anunciaba de manera premonitoria la llegada de la cadena MTV. Luego estos músicos se unen al grupo Yes y graban el álbum Drama, (uno de los discos más criticados por los puristas de Yes dado su giro comercial).
Volviendo al año 1981, recuerdo estar en el primer año de bachillerato y con los amigos del colegio íbamos a las discotiendas, de vez en cuando comprábamos algún disco, y muchas veces nos quedábamos extasiados viendo las caratulas de los discos importados, y cual habrá sido mi sorpresa al descubrir entre los estantes un disco que incluía a miembros de: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, King Crimson y The Buggles. El Grupo de rock era Asia al igual que su disco homónimo. Este era todo un supergrupo: John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer y Geoffrey Downes.
Todo un gran disco de rock progresivo muy criticado por su dirección musical hacia la comercialidad y la escucha fácil, ya que nunca antes sonaban tan insistentemente en la radio temas de rock progresivo como por ejemplo Only Time Will Tell, Heat of the Moment, y Wildest Dreams. En el disco en general se escuchan espectaculares solos de batería por parte de Carl Palmer, el indiscutible sonido y virtuosismo de la guitarra de Steve Howe, el acompañamiento de un teclado que se acerca mucho al sonido New Wave, y la poderosa voz de John Wetton. Este álbum debut vendió más de 10 millones de copias a nivel mundial.
Pese a todas las críticas al día de hoy este disco en un clásico del rock progresivo.
Este grupo a lo largo de los años tuvo varias formaciones y varios álbumes realizo giras a nivel mundial, se lanzaron en videos varios de sus conciertos en vivo, e incluso una rareza como Asia in Asia en donde Greg Lake, (de Emerson, Lake & Palmer), sustituye a John Wetton como voz cantante.
El 26 de mayo de 2011, en el anfiteatro del Centro Comercial Sambil en la ciudad de Caracas en Venezuela se presenta la formación original de Asia celebrando sus 30 años de existencia.
Recuerdo que a esta presentación tuve que ir sólo dado que no tenía dinero para comprar dos entradas, y por otro lado a mi esposa no le gusta el rock progresivo, ella es más fanática del pop.
El escenario era muy sobrio, no muy espectacular que digamos, el anfiteatro estaba a medio llenar, lo que atribuyo al alto precio de las entradas y a la grave situación económica que ya se empezaba a sentir en mi país, yo compre mi boleto en la tercera fila, y la vista al escenario era espectacular, me sentía muy cerca de los músicos.
Comienza el espectáculo y la voz de John Wetton se percibía con la misma potencia que hace 30 años, el acompañamiento en los teclados por parte de y Geoffrey Downes era soberbio, pase todo el concierto emocionado y con la carne de gallina.
Fui testigo presencial de la maestría de Steve Howe ya sea con la guitarra eléctrica o clásica

El sonido y la acústica resultaron ser muy buenos.
Este concierto cual máquina del tiempo me hizo retroceder 30 años en el tiempo recordando a grandes amigos que por cosas del destino o del trabajo tengo tiempo que no veo, hice retrospección en cuanto a cómo era mi forma de ver la vida en esa pre adolescencia, me reía al pasar por mi mente todas las tonterías que había hecho en aquella época.
Volviendo al concierto, puedo decir que me sentí en las nubes, muy satisfecho al ver tanto prodigio junto, y además sorpresa, al salir del concierto me encontré con uno de mis mejores amigos de hace 30 años.
Lamentablemente, John Wetton murió en el año 2017, Carl Palmer se encuentra activo con el grupo Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, Steve Howe y Geoffrey Downes han vuelto a formar parte del grupo Yes.
Siempre quise ver al grupo Asia en vivo y ese deseo se me cumplió, lamento no haber compartido esa noche de concierto con mi esposa, sin embargo, establecí de nuevo contacto hasta el día de hoy con ese gran amigo perdido.
