I think that when a person mistreats an animal he does it because when abusing a weaker creature they feel superior beings exercising cruelty and participating directly or indirectly in the torture or lack of attention to this.
It is unacceptable and reprehensible to cause pain to any animal, since it is a being with feelings like any other living being.
Animals feel pain even if they do not have a language like ours to communicate it, they are conscious of pain, they are beings capable of feeling and suffering and can suffer from anxiety, stress or depression.
In addition, people capable of committing acts of cruelty towards animals are also capable of directing violence against other human beings, who are generally vulnerable, unable to defend themselves and more submissive. They develop antisocial behaviors and incur in crimes against the property of others and disturbance of public order.
More than two thousand years ago the Roman poet Ovidio said:
...cruelty to animals teaches cruelty to humans.
To solve this problem, the first thing to do is to educate society, starting with the family environment, since it is in this environment where the human being grows and learns the behaviors, emotions, feelings and traits that will characterize his personality.
If within our homes abusing others is seen as something normal, this attitude will be emulated by children and will give a justification to abuse an animal. It is here where the relationship with the different has a fundamental role in human psychological development and education to respect animals is essential for the formation of the concepts of empathy, altruism and acceptance. In the case of domestic animals, they must be treated with affection and educated so that they do not cause problems at home or in the community where we live.
It is necessary to prevent child abuse, and teach people how to act before the behaviors of a living being, this would also help to avoid unpleasant behaviors in animals that trigger violence in humans.
Secondly, it would put a little more pressure on the authorities, since in many cases animals are not a priority for them. There must be awareness that these actions are typified by Law, and the Government has the obligation to attend to them.
I, together with organizations in favor of animals, would establish mandatory campaigns to let the population know what the punishment is, and what are the characteristics of the fines for such a deplorable act, with the purpose of achieving a harmonious coexistence within society.
As a personal anecdote I can say that I am not very attached to animals, however in December 2021 in the building where my neighbors and I live we found three small abandoned cats in a box, with signs of abuse and malnutrition. My daughter insisted that she wanted one of those kittens and without my permission and after running after him a lot, she brought him home. It turns out that it was a cat, At the insistence of my wife and I decided to adopt her as a pet.
At first I resisted the idea, but little by little I became fond of the animal, we began to educate her to do her needs in one place and to eat twice a day. Seeing the behavior that this cat has had in a little more than a year I have to say that she is very intelligent, as well as independent. Every day she climbs up to my bed and wakes me up by headbutting me as if she knows I have to go to work. She is a hunter cat that has been in charge of eliminating any strange insect that enters our house.

This pet has taught me to love animals more, and has taught me to take care of them, feed them and to understand that as living beings they deserve all our attention and support.
