Good evening, blogging friends, for this weekend experience, it was hard to choose a topic because there were so many interesting ones, some controversial like the ones I chose. I was a little hesitant about the choice due to the sensitivity of the topic, but I like a challenge, and tomorrow I can always delve into another topic. I chose this one:
" Imagine you had a daughter and she was brutally raped and the perpetrator captured; what punishment would be suitable and why?"
Putting yourself in the shoes of a parent whose daughter is raped isn't easy. I think the first emotion that comes to mind is anger, a very strong anger driven by the instinct to protect one's offspring. So at first glance, I'd say the rapist's punishment should be cruel. Luckily, Hive isn't a place where political correctness reigns supreme, so we can express ourselves in harsher terms. If I were a parent whose daughter was raped, I'd probably want her rapist to be punished in an exemplary manner, perhaps with torture or the tooth-for-tooth method, having him raped in turn, perhaps even viciously and with a certain ferocity. I think this would be my first thought, but would it help? Would it be useful? Would it teach me anything? Let's say that, after the initial anger, if I were to reflect on the rapist's punishment in a less cruel way, I'd choose a different type of punishment.
Because, when you think about it, cruel punishment ultimately yields no result other than turning us into executioners ourselves, and it certainly won't take away the trauma of rape from our daughter. I believe it could be useful, and even subtly cruel, to make rapists listen to and understand the victims' pain, thus triggering their sense of guilt (for those who have it, there would surely also be monsters who might find tales of suffering arousing out of pure sadism) and making them understand and experience the harm they have caused, reminding them every day of the pain they caused and reminding them that that woman could have been their mother or daughter, and how they would have felt if a man had done this to a family member. For reformable rapists, for irreformable ones who will surely return to crime and are incapable of rehabilitation, I would propose either life imprisonment—but that would be a cost to the state, and therefore to us citizens who pay taxes—or chemical castration to eradicate the problem at its root. Drastic? Yes, but certainly effective!
