Never thought it would be a raining morning, I have been longing and hoping for rain for some days now and now it came and it's not looking like it will stop anytime soon. I have been awake for hours since 5am, my babe is back with me in the city and she had woken me up because of the Rainstorm coming. Reluctantly, I manage to get up and sluggishly walk barefooted to the kitchen and the living room to shut all the windows close. O boy, it feels like a miles walk from my room, I wished something could levitate me to and fro but my wishes didn't come through. I now totally believe early morning sleep(at dawn) is the best, its when your body enjoy the resetting rituals of the body for another day of running helter-skelter. I couldn't go back to sleep afterwards, it's still raining hard and we are almost done with the special spicy breakfast of buns my girl has be all about since a day and a half back😊😚.
Truth is, we both have been craving for pastries for some days, unfortunately my girlfriend's no eat out policy is too strong, therefore i couldn't go out to buy some buns, pies, fishrolls and so on to satisfy my cravings. Can't say for my girl because she won't approve of it, I know her like the back of my hand now lol. Surprisinnly she woke up yesterday and said she's going to make an homemade bun, I couldn't contain my joy but I tried my possible best as the hard man I use to be(haha) not to show it.
Buns ain't so strange yeah? But each region has their own special way of making it. Its strange that I haven't tasted any other buns aside my locally made own, seems I tasted a foreign made one at some conference some years back but I'm not so certain as I have forgotten how it really tasted like. There's this soft crunchy feeling about it, that depends on how its made and the process. Some love it softer like bread while it has to be crunchy a bit on the outside for some of us lol. I really want to taste those Chinese buns someday, I love how they look like in movies and documentaries.
At day break, after rousing myself from the sleepwalking(my eyes still heavy with sleep and I can't go back to bed), we; myself and my partner set to work. I wouldn't be excused regardless of how tiny my kitchen is. Women have a way of holding you to ransom and there's nothing you could do about it lol, I mean when you both are in love and not a one-sided thing. She won, and so I stayed as part time assistant chef to do my quota of the task at hand. As I watched as she mixed the flower and some of the recipe, I was partly dozing on the freezer I was resting on. She kept tapping me, so I missed some part of the processes but u asked her about it and I'll highight them below for anyone who wishes to try out an African-Nigerian Homemade Spicy Buns.
Recipe:
- Flour
- Baking powder
- Nut Meg
- Sugar
- Butter
- Milk
- Fresh Red Pepper
- Vegetable Oil
- Water
Procedure:
Add baking powder to the flower in a bowl. Also, you must have added sugar, nut meg, butter and milk in proportions. Mix till its well mixed and smooth, add shredded red pepper and mix till it's even. Cover the flour mixture for like five minutes to seven minutes before the frying process. After the covering phase, use hands to cut the thick buns dough into little round like chunks, not too tiny and not too big.
Put a non-sticky frying pan on low to medium heat(gas burner, electric Stove etc), add vegetable oil, about three to four cups so that the buns dough can immerse and float when cooking mid frying. Start adding the little chuncks of buns dough made with hands into the hot oil on fire and fry in sets for like seven to minutes till its golden brown or as per how soft you like it.
From the image above, the one frying is almost done while the ones we were straining the oil off with sieve is crunchily done(over cooked a bit). That's how I like it, I don't like when food are not cooked well, makes me nauseous hence I prefer things slightly over cooked to be on the safe side lol. Though my girl didn't approve, but I was doing the frying after she mixed it all up(the toughest part for me), so I have the final say. She did enjoy the somewhat over fried crunchy crispy buns when it was served, all the argument and nagging went down the drain when she tasted it and she liked it(heeehooo)!
