When I read if you could choose any person on the planet to be on your personal panel-of-life-advisers who would it be and why them in particular? It was not easy for me but then I thought and zeroed on my childhood hero Sundar Pichai.
Today, I look back and think about who inspired me the most to achieve my goals. I have couple of people that influenced me to become what I am today. I could have written about my commerce teacher, who was also my cricket coach. I could have written about my various other teachers, but I think the one who inspired me the most was none other than Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google.
Another thing that inspired me was that he also played cricket in his school team, and I love people that play cricket. Sundar Pichai completed his 12th examination in Chennai. After that, he completed his graduation in Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. He then completed his Masters in Science degree in Physics at Stanford University and eventually went to the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, for MBA studies. But before joining Google, Sundar Pichai worked as an operations consultant at McKinsey & Company.
Sundar Pichai joined Google in 2004. Initially, he worked with a small team on the Google Search Tool Bar. With the help of this toolbar, even today, people are able to search Google in Internet Explorer. He also worked on Google’s products, such as Google Gear and Google Pack. After the success of the Google Toolbar, a new idea came to Sundar Pichai’s mind, and that was to make their own internet browser. Then-CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, thought that making their own Internet browser was a very expensive project and denied it.
In the same year, 2008, Sundar Pichai was promoted as the Vice President of Product Development. But that did not satisfy Sundar so soon as he came to this position, Pichai started working even harder, and in 2012, he became the Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps.
The creator of Android, Andy Rubin, left the Android project in 2013 due to another project. After this, Larry Page made Pichai in-charge of Android. Later, in October 2014, he was made the Product Chief. Maybe Google took the entire world by surprise when it announced Sundar Pichai as the CEO of its company, but not me. I was confident that he would reach the top one day. By the way, it is a matter of great pride for the people of India that an Indian has been chosen as the CEO of the world’s largest company, Google.
Today, almost everyone worth his bread knows Sundar Pichai all over the world for his approach. Pichai is almost 20 years older than me, and he too was born into a lower middle class family like I was, so I thought, why not? His father was an electrical engineer and lived in the city of Chennai. And that prompted me to go to Chennai for higher education after my graduation. Sundar always inspired me to do the things that he did, although we worked in different fields.
On August 10, 2015, Sundar Pichai became the new CEO of Google. In February 2016, he was posted to Alphabet Inc. But what I like most is that he still interacts with the students of various colleges through Skype. And I am one of those lucky ones, even if I have to join a group from my old college since I am no longer a student.
We lived in a village near a town, and we did not like the fact that, although we had enough to live on, our life was not as respectable and luxurious as others’. My father was a farmer. It was nothing much. But when I saw people driving cars, whereas my father used to come and go by bicycle, I was about 15 years old. I had the same habit. But later, this played a big role in my life. I still bike with as much pride as I used to feel then.

I remember the time when I was selected for the scholarship. Some were sent to bigger commerce colleges in metros. I opted for Chennai because it was the city where Sundar came from. I will not hide a fact here that my ex also belonged to Chennai, so I did not want to live close to her, but that’s a forgotten story now, so I got my post-grad degree from a Chennai college.
I feel that most people know that Sundar Pichai is the CEO of a big company like Google, but there are very few people who know how much hard work and struggle are behind his success. I have been following him ever since I was in high school, and I know the inspirational story of Sundar Pichai. I know what he did to become Google Product Manager.
I have met Sundar during his various visits to India in different cities, where he comes often and tries to help students and people through his various projects. I love his smile that appears on his face. He explains that "I had a strong desire to learn, which helped me a lot to move forward. I know I will make it to the top one day because I am following one of the best in his field.
