Every two years teachers in Australia have to do a first aid course, and every year, we have to be refreshed on anaphalysis. It's so bloody boring. I know it's important but I'm pretty sure I have had enough first aid training to last for the rest of my life.
The Weekend Experiences community asked what I'd choose between learning first aid, playing a musical instrument, learning a new language or how to cook at expert level. Now that first aid is absolutely out of the freaking question, let's see what I'd choose.
I can already cook at a pretty good level - I'd say I'm an expert cook. I don't need a recipe to cook anything from irish stews to tofu tacos. I'm pretty confident in my cooking ability. Currently I've got an eggplant chutney on the stove and a seedy bread in the oven.
I'd love to learnt a new language - Arabic woud be cool, or Spanish. My brain and tongue find languages difficult, perhaps because I'm Australian and we're so far away from other countries that we've never really felt the need to learn nor practice. Given I'm probably going to live here for the rest of my life, and when I travel, I have google translate, I don't feel the need to (though I'd really love to!)
Thus it's a musical instrument, please. I'd love to be proficient in playing guitar like my son and my nephews. Dad played the guitar for years - badly. He loved it. I like to think he's playing with Robert Johnson in heaven. We've all been raised on a steady diet of guitar music. This week I've been forcing myself to listen to Dad's music because though it breaks my heart to hear it, I know that if I can get through the pain of each note, that he'll be present in the music, and that is such a beautiful thought to me.
Dad and my nephew, some time ago.
My nephew is 16 and really working hard with his band 'Could Be Stars' - listen here on Spotify, and my son has been gigging a bit again with his mate, and works to produce albums for some bands in Melbourne. How cool would it be for me to play with them.
It's also a language in itself - I love how music transcends, how it unites people, regardless of the language we speak. Being able to communicate on this level with people would be a dream.
With Love,
