Playa Parguito is one of the most visited beaches on Margarita Island. Nationally and internationally recognized for hosting surfing and body boarding championships and is currently one i the island to protect sea turtles.
Precisely that was our weekend destination, specifically on Saturday.
You might think that living on an island and having the beaches so close we go very often. But the truth is different and I must confess that I am not very fond of the sea especially because getting home and remove all the sand from the head of the children is a very little fun hehehe.
But in spite of everything we visit the beach every other weekend because it is an activity that the kids enjoy a lot and that in general is good for all of us. Going to the beach always recharges your batteries. I don't know what it is about it but that's how it is!
We don't usually visit this particular beach even though it is quite close to our house, and it is just its main attraction (its strong waves) that leads us not to visit it, since with small children we try to look for quieter and safer beaches.
I have many treasured memories of Parguito beach from my adolescence. I spent all my weekends there watching the surfing competitions since I had several friends who participated, so it was a fixed visit on the weekends.
Sitting on the sand again and enjoying the beautiful views took me back to wonderful times. Moments that I enjoyed in the company of my cousins and friends and that I can now enjoy with my children.
That particular day the idea was to go as a group of friends because we were three moms with our children who study together and are best friends, so we decided to bring them together and what better place than the sea!
As soon as we arrived we were struck by the large number of birds in the beautiful blue sky. I had never seen so many together before, which caught not only my attention but also that of the children.
Playa Parguito is a really beautiful beach and currently has many restaurants and service providers to make tourists feel at ease during their stay.
It has a fairly strong swell so it is regularly visited by surf lovers, but right now one of its biggest attractions, at least for me, is that it is one of the largest sea turtle conservation centers we have on the island.
In this beautiful beach four species of turtles come to lay their eggs; the Hawksbill, the Cardon, the Green turtle and the Loggerhead. So between the months of March and September you can see these majestic animals emerge from the sea to lay their eggs in our warm sands.
Once the turtle leaves the nest, the members of the Mares Foundation come into action and surround the nest to protect it from possible predators, keeping a constant watch over it. In fact, they have a hut on the seashore for this purpose.
At the moment they have 5 nests under supervision and a hatchery to which they transfer the eggs that they consider to be in danger.
Our visit to Parguito beach this time had two motives. The first, of course, was to enjoy a nice day in the company of friends and on the other hand, our children (Arturo, Matias and Santiago) are doing a school project on the hatching of the turtles, so they would take the opportunity to ask some questions.
Unfortunately Arturo could not join us due to health problems, so we were only Santiago's mom, who has a beautiful baby girl named Gabriela who gets along great with my daughter Miranda, who took advantage of every second of the sea and the sand.
I think that for a parent there is nothing better than to see their children happy and to see them share with their friends in that way, to be able to play with so much freedom and enjoy the beautiful creation of God is really wonderful.
The swell was very strong that day so they were practically on the shore and as my son Matias says "we brought the whole beach in our pants " hehehehe. And the fact is that the waves broke on the shore and filled them all with sand.
And also apparently they came up with something that I called sand therapy hahaha. They rolled on the warm sand until they were completely covered!
The girls preferred to play sitting near the sea so that it would get them a little wet when they reached the shore and of course pose for pictures! For them it is a unique moment to be able to meet and play together because they don't do it often.
As for me, feeling the sea sand on my feet is always like a kind of therapy. Taking a deep breath and filling my lungs and my whole being with the sea breeze is something that can't be compared to anything else.
I know there may be many other ways to have a great weekend, but being there surrounded by such grandeur makes you appreciate the life you have and the blessing of being healthy enough to enjoy such beauty.
The children toured the nests and talked with Mr. Miguel who is one of those who spends day and night at the concentration center in the company of some members of the Mares Foundation to guard the nests.
All in all it was a very productive afternoon because besides being an enjoyable time for the children, they are raising awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles and in fact taking care of our planet in general and every living being that inhabits it and especially endangered species.
Fortunately there are such associations that dedicate their lives to the protection of turtle nests and after the hatching they take care of the release of the baby turtles.
Let us also do our bit to take care of them.
