Oh this week I have been given something quite profound to think on...
My friend asked some wonderful questions this week for the #weekend-engagement posting and engagement topic, the theme of the week is Who?
As always he offered several options to tie in to the general theme, there was one that stood out head and shoulders above the rest for me, and it was this:
Topic four: Who would you be
If you could be anyone, other than yourself, who would it be and why? You can choose someone deceased or currently alive. Have some fun with this one if you like, make your answer humorous and creative, or keep it serious. It's your choice.
I cannot lie, the person I have chosen as the person I would desperately love to be occupies a position I have fantasised about holding many, many times before...
Yes Dear Reader, I would be supreme overlord of the planet!
On first glance this may seem an ego laden choice, it may seem to hearken to my messiah complex but I can explain, seriously, I can...
All too often I look at global events and despair, as I am sure you do too. This leads me on to fantasising about what I would do if I had the ultimate veto, the opportunity to overrule the appalling choices made by those who purport to be our leaders.
The position of supreme overlord of the planet may sound a little overbearing I concur but does the reality of that station not depend on the heart and integrity of the man or woman who occupies that role?
Firstly, let me explain something important... I am not a socialist, nor do I harbour any socialist leanings but social concerns would lie at the very heart of my policies and be the cornerstone of my grand manifesto.
If people do not come first in the minds and decisions made by our appointed leaders, how on earth could we allow them any sway?
All too often it feels though the very people appointed the task of looking after humanity, lack any humanity. It feels as though they act in their own interests, the interests of lobbyists and spin doctors and barely care if we common people lived or died.
The thing that they miss and I mean miss massively is the fact that we, the people, are the silent majority.
We live, we love, we care (on the whole), about our brothers and sisters who occupy the spaces around this blue and green orb we call home.
Just think for a moment about the things that matter most to you, do you find anybody really standing up for those beliefs?
If I were to occupy that position, one of the first things I would take hold of is the national debt of each country. Surely when you hear about the astronomical sums that make up your national debt, your mind automatically strays to the matter of your home budget...
If you are approaching the end of the month and have very little money left, you would take certain actions, right?
You would not order dinner from a takeaway pizza shop every day between noticing the issue and payday at the end of the month, right?
You would be patently aware that you simply cannot afford it... This means that it would be irresponsible to waste the money this way.
I often look at buildings owned by the local authority and local government and notice that they are visible from miles away thanks to the masses of lights blazing all nigh long.
If your budget was tight, you would not leave all the lights in your home burning through the night, am I right?
That is like throwing monetary bills on a fire, isn't it?
If a community, country or continent was struggling for money, I would allow no further statues or frivolous art installations to be commissioned, there's a time for cultural investment and the time is not when the coffers are empty!
So far, I realise my ideas have been trifling, a piddling drop in the ocean, if you will, but I stand by them as a start nonetheless.
Let's move on to the not-so small matter of nuclear disarmament and the dissembling of any and ALL chemical and biological warfare programmes...
As a species the fact we spend trillions globally on bigger and more effective ways to destroy each-other utterly disgusts me, I would hope that it does you too!
Who the hell, ever thought, hey, I've invented a nuclear missile that could kill everyone in a 200 mile radius, isn't that a cool development should have been boiled with his own research, never to resurface again.
AS for those who grabbed this with both hands as an effective way to wipe out their enemies, allies, neighbours should have been instantly thrown out of office and jailed indefinitely for allowing crimes against humanity!!!
If I were in charge of the noblest virtues for humanity to extol in order to give the best account of itself, peace, hope, charity, empathy, love would be right up there with many other ways of creating greater connection between the peoples of the world.
One day we will genuinely face an existential threat to our species, I would have far greater faith if the peoples of the word were on the same page with regard to seeing this off through cooperation and a firm commitment from ALL parties to ensure the continuation of our species.
I believe that humanity is still very much in it's infancy but that if we came together in the spirit of self preservation and a shared aim to lift all the people of Earth to a base level of sufficiency with the intention of defeating disease, famine and abstract poverty, we would have a far more fulfilling existence.
I realise that the words I have wrote here today may appear to be simplistic, trite and maybe even a little juvenile but why not?
Do you doubt that the world I propose would be anything other than far superior than the one we inhabit now?
Listen, here's the thing. we have to start somewhere, right? We are the voters, the enablers of leaders and governments, if we TRULY decided, this far and no further, who could ever really stop us?
Just look at the news that fills your TV screens this very day and tell me that this kind of ideology would not be far superior to what we have, right now?
Thank YOU for taking the time to read my post and if you're one of those amazing people who like to hit the comments section... Then I doubly thank YOU!
Either way I want you to know that you are appreciated!
