It is that time of year again, the weekend before Easter. That means that we have decorated some pussy willow twigs with ribbons and feathers, and Smallsteps will knock on the doors of family to beg for some candy.
It is a bit like trick or treat, without the adult sluttiness.
And for the first time, Smallsteps will be putting on a concert on Sunday with a selection of pieces to close the chapter on her first piano book. This is apparently a necessary tradition for her to move onto the next part of her training. It will be held at our house and witnessed by my wife's family, as well as her teacher. It is kind of cool and she is excited about performing in front of people, and putting on a bit of a show. She will have to do this every time she finishes a book, but it isn't very serious. Still, my wife is going to bake and stuff so it is a bit of an experience.
Speaking of which, tomorrow I would have got my birthday present, which was a massage at a spa centre and then we all would have spent a few hours swimming there together. Instead, it got cancelled, because Smallsteps has been sick and Puusti the Dog had surgery yesterday to take two of his baby teeth out. So instead of a pretty cheap present, I get no present and ten times as much went to the vet. This has happened in some way to several of my birthday presents, with concert tickets getting cancelled, trips getting cancelled, and gifts having to be sent back for one reason or another. I tell my wife not to bother getting anything, because I think not having it is better than the disappointment of having it taken away.
I really need a massage and was looking forward to it.
Oh well.
The other thing that happens this weekend is the ridiculous moving of the clocks to summer time, which means we will "lose" an hour at 4am Sunday morning. I hate daylight saving changes, they make no sense. I don't know anyone who likes them either, so why do we keep up with this stupidity that costs far more than it is worth. It is even more ridiculous in places closer to the equator that don't have dramatic changes in daylight anyway. And then in places in the north, the light changes so quickly that it negates the change in a week or two.
Well, rather than a relaxing weekend with a massage and a swim, it is going to be cleaning the house, helping in the kitchen, driving Smallsteps around to knock on doors, and then hosting people here that aren't going to talk much to me anyway. Brilliant! But hey, I can't complain too much about it, right?
When it comes to the door-knocking, this might be the last year she does it before she deems herself too old. Though, for free candy, it doesn't stop a lot of the older kids with the most horrible effort of twig decoration from knocking on the door. They also expect that is enough, but there is a song they are meant to sing and I will make them sing, so they have to go through the teenage shame of it.
You have to earn your candy around here.
Hopefully though, I will have some time to get to the gym on both days, because I am trying to make sure that unless I am unable to physically, I will go. I am tired of the excuses of other people in why they can't do the things they want or know they should, so I am going to try and just do all I can, until I drop.
That might be sooner, rather than later.
