I am in love with Drag 👑
Thanks to my friend's subscription to HBO Go, I get to watch Drag Race PH and all its glory. I have a newfound sense of respect for Drag Queens. Imagine making your own costume, doing your own makeup, practicing for a lipsync/impersonation performance, nailing a choreography all the while healing the wounds associated with coming out and becoming a member of the LGBT Community? Only legends do that.
This was one of the 2022 weekends with my girls that was one for the books. I did not have expectations for that evening, except for wanting to have fun since MBA exam week was over. I did not even expect that I would be going to a Drag Performance. It took a few delays before we got here.
Since my girlfriends were from Lapu-Lapu city, an island away from my place, I had to drive to go see them. I wanted the trip to be worth it, so I gassed up at my favorite Shell station. It was my favorite because for some reason, gas prices per liter was cheaper there. I then went to the Cafe that one of my friends was killing time in, only to find out that they were already on their way to City Times Square, to the other side of the island where I just came from 😅 I didn't mind because driving is therapeutic for me.
When I got there, the plans changed again. It turned out that the 8th Avenue Comedy Bar already changed locations. They were now located at Cebu, the city after where we're at. The delays didn't annoy me, I really wanted to have fun. Driving to Cebu was another story. I got lost for a bit. The girls were waiting for me, I was still trying to find my way 😅 Thankfully, we got over all the delays and we found ourselves a spot that was front and center of the comedy bar.
This wall was a favorite! The show haven't even started yet but these jokes cracked me up 😂

The first batch of queens didn't disappoint. One wowed us with her retro chic realness. The other channeled her inner Jessie J. My personal favorite was the Celine Dion impression of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." The humorous portrayal and the lip sync worked really well. There was one thing that would have made the performances more perfect for me - the music! It was just too loud! It felt like my ear drums were already bleeding.
The second batch of queens gave us more dancing, singing and theatrical performances. One was the best dancer for me. The other was an African national. My personal favorite of this batch was the queen who gave the audience a theatrical performance of Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do." She even gave out free candies to everyone.
The third batch of queens flexed their splits, daring outfits and humorous antics. One danced for the boys in the audience. The other was really pretty and her underwear was showing (she wore stockings underneath so it was still safe for work 😂 The last one was quite funny in her portrayal of a horse. She was a foreigner, I think a Nigerian.
This batch of queens gave us Burlesque and a naughty performance. One queen was really pretty and she danced her heart out to Christina Aguilera's Burlesque. She nailed it. The other queen was so naughty. Her music was a loud moaning woman. It was so painful to hear 😂. I really wanted to place the music on mute! But she just kept going at it. The audience was a good sport about it though.
It was but right that the queens gave us a powerful introduction with Alex Newell & DJ Cassidy with Nile Rodgers "Kill the Lights." It really set the mood right of what was to come. This show made me really hopeful for the Drag Community in Cebu. It wasn't at par with the Queens in the Capital City of Manila yet. But in time, I am quite optimistic that their performance will be appreciated here in my place.
This duo did a pretty good job at giving the audience the appetizer we deserved. They were the right mix of talent and humor. They flexed their voices hitting high notes while sitting down and the occasional giggles when they threw below-the-belt jokes to each other. Before they went on to hit these below-the-belt jokes to the audience, they gave us a disclaimer. Everyone was game.
Except perhaps, when they came at one of my friends. I noticed that my friend did not react when they threw shade at our table. It turned out that my friend didn't like that the joke singled her out. I understood where my friend was coming from, but at the end of the night, she was able to move on. It is very important to be good sports when coming to places like these. Thanks for reading, until the next weekend!
