I have quite a good relationship with swearing. Indeed in my eyes there are worst things one can do. I have what you could call, a healthy relationship with it. I understand that some people get very offended by certain words and there are some that I also find offensive. But I do also enjoy, how expressive swearing can be.
Growing up in Ireland, we use the word Feck a lot, which is really just a polite way to to say fuck. Well that is what I tell myself anyway. When I am frustrated or annoyed, my most favourite expression is 'for fecks sake' or 'feck that'. Both of which, my girls hear me say, maybe perhaps too often.
To be honest it really depends on the context, why someone swears in the first place. If it is directed at someone, in a nasty manner, then I do not like it. Of course I have done it in the past, I think everyone has. When you get angry, it's normal to lose the run of oneself and say things that you do not mean, in the heat of the moment that is.
Like I said previously, swearing can be a very good way of expressing how you feel, one which many other words fail to do. Especially when said with the right tone. So yes I do use swear words, but mostly to express how I am feeling. Rarely do I use them to offend someone. But if you are to really upset or annoy me, I could very well swear at you.
I have a very lovely relationship with one so called swear word. One that quite a lot of people find very offensive. My sister is one of them. I remember telling her that I would be running Cunt Craft workshops. At which she began to tell me, how offensive she found the word Cunt, that to her it is the worst swear word you could use, especially towards a woman.
I have done some research about the origins of the word Cunt,a word that has a lot of ties to Goddesses down through the ages. Goddesses from all over the world. 'Cuneiform is one of the earliest known forms of writing in Sumeria dating at c.3100 BC. ‘Cunt’ is also the only word in the English language that we can use for the whole of the female genitalia.
So this one word, which is so offensive to others, is in fact quite a powerful word. Perhaps that is why some find it so offensive, because when you say it, you feel the power of it. That is the thing with words, they do hold power, words are spells at the end of the day.
So it is important to understand the power in which we give words. The intention we have when we use them. Which of course goes for swearing as well. So a life without swearing, I think not. For me, it makes for a more colourful life.
