Hello, wholesome reader!
I stumbled upon WEEKEND EXPERIENCES' writing prompt for this #weekend-engagement and I found a topic that piqued my interest. The question imposed was "What if you didn't need to sleep?"
As we all know, sleep is an essential part of our everyday health. The amount and quality of sleep we get dictates how well our brain and physical body function in the span of time that we are awake.
Thinking about the idea of not needing to sleep makes my heart pound. I mean that would be very amazing! Imagine all the things you can do in a day, utilizing all 24 hours, without ever needing coffee to stay awake. I wonder what kind of life would that be.
What Would I Do?
As much as possible, I try to get eight full hours of sleep, contributing a third of my day solely to sleep. While I work another eight hours a day, I only have the remaining eight hours for leisure and personal use.
I have given some thought about the question and got excited to list down the things I would definitely do if I need not to sleep. As I have mentioned, the idea of not needing sleep gives me the adrenaline rush as I am such a sucker for productivity — no sleep means having the opportunity to increase my productivity level!
So, here's a list of the possible things I'd do.
1. Devote more time for self-improvement
I am a believer of continuous improvement and the most important person that should be applied with this concept is myself. Because whether I like it or not, the only one I'm stuck with is myself. And aside from me, the people around me – my family and friends – can also be greatly benefited from it.
If I didn't need to sleep, I'll devote more time to self-improvement. How? I think the first step is to increase self-awareness. As change is inevitable, humans are also constantly evolving and changing. The person I was a year ago is not exactly the same person I am today, and I'm pretty sure that's the case for you, too. That's why it is important to get to know oneself every once in a while, to unlearn and re-learn things about you. Through this, we also get the chance to know our new strengths and weaknesses, the things we value and those that we don't anymore.
As part of self-improvement, I would also take the opportunity to do exercise and workout if I had more time in a day. It's one of the things that I really wanted to do but I just can't insert it on my schedule. I am aware of the benefits of having a healthy body, so, I think this would definitely be on my daily to-do list if I didn't need sleep.
2. Hobbies and Recreational Activities
One of the things that I'm most excited to talk about is how I can allocate more time for my hobbies and other recreational activities if I need not to sleep!
My hobbies include painting, reading books, writing, watching TV series, and listening to music.
It's a silly thought but I can imagine how I can enhance my art skills faster if I didn't need sleep; how many books I could read and achieve my goal of reading at least 50 books a year; how I could pen down all my thoughts and the things I wanted to write about without being interrupted by sleepiness; how many TV series I could watch from my long list of series titles; and how many Taylor Swift songs I can listen to everyday! I might sound crazy right now but the thought makes me giddy. 😅
3. Learn More Things
No matter how random it could be, I love learning things as I am a very curious person. Just to share, I am currently learning two foreign languages: Korean and French. I found these languages interesting because 1) I am an avid fan of Korean dramas, I wanted to watch them without needing to read the subtitles; 2) French is a widespread language and there are actually a lot of French speakers in the world, bonjour! If I didn't need to sleep, I might be able to master these languages in a shorter span of time.
Another interesting discovery about learning random things that I had was finding out about the Netflix series titled Explained. In each episode, they explain one random thing, belief, tradition, etc. It was a happy discovery for the little nerd inside me. If sleep was nonexistent, how blissful would it be to have more time to learn about things!
What Would Change?
If people can function 24/7 without getting tired and sleepy, the overall productivity level around the globe might dramatically increase! I bet a lot of people might opt to work more hours to earn more. Count me in 😉
In a world where sleep is not a necessity, I wonder if bedrooms would still exist. It's a funny thought but, possibly, sales for beds and mattresses would significantly drop, lol. And if I were to convert my bedroom, I'd make it as my Hobbies and Leisure Room, considering the things I want to do involve hobbies and other recreational stuff.
But on a serious note, if people didn't need sleep, I think one of the consequences would be the faster destruction of earth. Imagine a world where there is a huge demand for electricity consumption, the number of appliances and gadgets that would be running 24/7, the amount of harmful substances that would be emitted from these things. What do you think? Share your thoughts! 😊
