Life as a student was one of the most amazing phases of my life. We meet different people from different homes with various ideas and characters. There is a saying that you can't know the true color of someone until you are together under the same roof.
This is how I get to meet with my roommates. Adeyinka and Hamid. Adeyinka is a scholar and someone who likes to read frequently. He is either reading or playing educational games on his mobile. I liked his personality to some extent. Though no one is perfect.
We had times we quarreled, but he was always quick to apologize. He has been the jovial and funny type. This is more of a reason why we got so close to each other. It's like we had studied each other and understood our differences.
Compared to Hamid who is just way different. He hardly relates with people, but makes a lot of friends. I wonder how he is always so quick to establish friendships with people and yet he doesn’t know how to relate with them.
He is the worst chef and the most lazy among us. He loves to play street football, and if you didn’t find him on the football field then he is either sleeping for hours or he strolled out of home.
On my end, I am in between, I don't have issues with any of them. So far I try to understand everyone for who they are and then reciprocate the kind of energy they channel towards me.
Hamid and Adeyinka are like cats and rats. They don't even want to see each other. Yet they have to sleep together in the same room. Many times I have come in between to settle misunderstandings, arguments, and quarrels between both of them.
Since Hamid can't cook, most times he has his meals outdoors. Then myself and Adeyinka would cook at home.
One day, Hamid was short of funds but he had foodstuffs with him. He realized I was about to prepare something for breakfast. Then he politely asked if he could add some additional rice to the one I was about to cook and then have his share out of it.
Okay! No problem. I responded.
Instead of him being patient enough and waiting for me to prepare the meal so he can eat before doing any other thing. He didn’t.
He left me to cook and then went to the field to play football. I felt he was rest assured that there would be food for him upon his arrival from the field.
I knew how stressed and hungry he might be whenever he was always back from the field. At times he would just get water and shower then sleep off without talking to anyone.
So that day I thought of teaching him a new lesson. I was so frustrated when I realized he had left me to cook like his maid and then he went to play football. When the food was ready I had a quick discussion with Adeyinka
Hmmm. Can you see Hamid now? I murmured.
What has he done again? Adeyinka asked
Would you believe that he asked me to prepare a meal and then he went out to play again? I responded.
You know this is not his first time doing this. I added.
Muhammad sighed lightly. Rendering him speechless. Since both of them, most times are not always on good terms with each other.
It's okay. I will teach him a lesson one day. I responded.
We finished eating and then I went to get all of the food left in the pot for both of us to eat. We ate to the satisfaction that day. And since I was the one who cooked, Adeyinka volunteered to do the dishes after.
While he was washing, Hameed came in hurriedly and hungry. He headed straight to the kitchen. He was expecting to have his rice remain in the pot. But instead, he saw Adeyinka washing the dishes. He didn’t think twice but unleashed his anger on him.
Where is my food? He asked with a strong voice.
Adeyinka didn’t give a response.
Don't you hear me!
Hamid already started to turn down all of the plates Adeyinka was washing. It was about to turn into a war between them.
While I was coming from where I went to fetch water, I heard them shout at each other. I rushed home and got inside the kitchen to see them almost hit each other.
I came in between them again as usual. Then I calmed both parties. I told Hamid that his food wasn’t in the pot today but on the shelf inside our room. I had to keep it well covered inside the room because of cockroaches that disturb our kitchen at times. So why pick up a quarrel with Adeyinka?
You should try to learn to be calm and take things easy. I added.
Now you just accused an innocent person of what he wasn’t guilty of. Only if you were patient enough all of these won't have happened.
I apologized on behalf of both parties and made sure Hamid never barked at the wrong tree again. He learned his lesson.
