Esther is in the jeep with her father, Michael who wants to go back to school during the pandemic.
They have parked outside the school for a couple of minutes.
Michael: why do you insist on going back to school when we could arrange for a homeschooling situation.
Esther: please dad we have had this discussion already. I really want to go back to school.
Michael: you might catch this disease from one of the children darling.
Esther: dad everything is going to be just fine. I will obey all the rules the principal has made.
Michael: fine. Always make sure you wear your mask on at all times.
Esther spots her friend Cherry's dad parking his car in front of them and decides to escape.
Esther:dad, I promise to put on my mask all times. Now I have to go. Cherry is here and I want to walk with her. I love you. Bye
She jumps out of the car, she runs to meet Cherry just as she gets to the gate.
Esther: hi bestie!
Cherry: hi soulmate!
They hug but quickly let go, they remembered they're not supposed to touch each on the school grounds.
Cherry: so how was your dad reaction this morning?
Esther:she was the clingiest, which annoyed me most.
Cherry:that's why I made my dad to stay at home, and drove with my mom.
They laugh as they walk into the school. They are stopped at the school gate by the security guard who washed their hands with sanitizer.
Cherry: the principal isn't playing any games. He put that private school tuition to good use.
Esther:this is only the beginning. We are going to sanitize our hands before we enter each classroom.
They laugh as they walk through the school grounds.
Cherry: this is punishment. Literally, during a pandemic, we are phakathi inside school. Is this fair?
Esther: don't you want to pass matric, Cherry?
Cherry: of course, I want to pass, I just wish I could pass from home, without catching life threatening illness.
Esther: seeing as there isn't much we can do about all that, we should stop complaining?
We are on duty, remember?
Cherry:it won't kill us to be late.
Esther:you know principal takes this stuff seriously. Now let's go.
They make their way to the school's back gate.
