I looked at the car parked right in front of our lot as a young dashing looking man walked out of the car all dressed in white. He didn't look like any one I'd seen before and his skin shone like he'd been bathing in gold. When he reached the front door I immediately ran over to the sitting room while my mother made it to the door.
I saw her open it with so much excitement as she exchanged pleasantries with this strange stranger. They both talked for a while but my mom still didn't make any move to motion him in and that was really unlike her, she'd been the most courteous person I'd ever met. As they talked, I tried to get a good look at this stranger's face and then our eyes met. He smiled at me and I saw perfectly white teeth.
He finally walked in while my mom, still wearing one of her most excited faces locked the door. This stranger walked directly towards me and knelt right in front of me, then he took my hand and kissed it. I could feel the warmth that came with the kiss but I was still very confused, what in heavens name was going on. My mom could read the confusion in my eyes as she too knelt down beside this stranger.
Immediately, my mind went back to Diana, my best friend. She'd convinced me to go to her place for Thanksgiving and after careful persuasion, my mom had eventually agreed. Truth is she actually had a thing for Diana, she loved the girl so much that she was happy both of us were friends. The day came and Diana's mom came to pick me from the house.
We headed to their home and I was surprised to see how big their family was. Grandma Abuelita was the happiest to receive me, cousins Domino, Sanchez and Frank were unmistakably giants, Diana's dad was the quiet type and her twin siblings Sofia and Sonia were really beautiful. Without wasting much time, everyone sat around the table while Diana's mom brought out the roasted chickens and placed it on the table.
Then before we could say or do anything else, Diana stretched out a wishbone towards me. I had no idea what it was at first but then she explained to me that I just needed to hold the bone on one side and make a wish then we'll break it, the one with the longest side gets his wish granted. I laughed at first but I saw she was serious and noticed every other pair had the same bone.
I held on to the bone and she told me to make a wish. There was only one thing I could have wished for, closing my eyes, I made the wish and then we broke the bone. After which Grandma led a little prayer and we all munched away.
Apparently what I had wished for was staring me right in the face.
"my son", he finally said and I could feel the tears running down my eyes.
If wishes were bones then I'm certainly breaking as many as possible.
