Wedding bells! I'm getting married! I'm getting married! I'm getting married! Anita announced to her friend one evening as she danced and waved her fingers about to show her friends that she has finally gotten engaged.
"Wooow!!!" everyone shouted for joy. "We have a wedding to plan!" Rita exclaimed with excitement. "We shall pop champagne for this," Alia added as she rushed to the bar in one corner of the sitting room to get drinks and cups for the five, including the bride.
They danced, gossiped, made merry, and got drunk. The celebration lasted throughout the night, and in the morning, the wedding plans and arrangements began.
Anita went back to her fiancé's house so they could discuss one or two things about their wedding day, especially the date, venue, and dress codes. After much deliberation, Andrew, who is the groom-to-be, drove his potential bride to her home, where they departed so each could have enough time to prepare with their families.
Anita also broke the news to her family—her lovely mother, dad, and two siblings. Of course, she was the eldest and the only daughter in the family. They were so happy for her. In two months, Anita will be the latest bride.
Unfortunately, a week before their wedding, something unpredictable happened. Anita went to spend the weekend with Andrew, her soon-to-be husband. After they both had dinner, Anita went to the bathroom to shower.
She saw Andrew's clothes littered on the bed. He must have forgotten to put his clothes in the laundry after returning home from his one-week trip.
As she was picking up the clothes, some pieces of paper fell out. She picked them up. "Oh! What is this?" she mused as she sat on the bed to check.
To her amazement, the papers were receipts from a popular hotel in the city, and the dates were recent—specifically from the previous week—when Andrew had told her that he was going for an official meeting that could earn him more money for their wedding.
The trip was supposed to be to Abuja, but here was a receipt showing Lagos, even a renowned place. Anita couldn't hold her anger, so she barged into the sitting room to find Andrew receiving a call and saying the words, "I love you," to the person on the other end.
"I knew it, Andrew! You are cheating on me! How can you be so heartless?" Anita said, tears gathering in her eyes.
"Babe, please calm down; it is not what you think," Andrew begged, gesturing in a persuasive manner. "I will explain everything to you, dear," he further stated.
"Oh no, this is not happening to me! You lied to me, saying you were going for a business meeting in Abuja, but here is your receipt for being in a hotel in Lagos for a whole week. Andrew, you are so mean!" Anita cried and left in tears.
Her friends received her warmly and tried to cheer her up, but all to no avail.
The following day, Andrew traced her to her friend's house; the four of them lived in a flat rented by them. Andrew screamed her name for hours so she could come out and hear his side of the story, but there was no response.
He kept going back there until one day, while standing at the door of Anita's friend's house, he said, "If you're calling off our wedding because of a misunderstanding, then it's fine; let's move on." He said this as a final note and was about to enter his car when Anabel opened the door.
She's Anita's best friend out of the four. "You may come in; let's hear it," she said and left the door open.
"The receipt was meant for us to go and spend our honeymoon in that hotel after our wedding, but I got a call from work to go urgently to meet with a client. I thought it might be another opportunity for us to make more money."
I wasn't aware that the date was different. The mistake was from the hotel; they issued a receipt for the same week I paid instead of the next week. Babe, I'm so sorry; it was meant to be a surprise because I know you love the hotel," Andrew explained.
"Who were you talking to on the phone five days ago?" Anita asked, still angry. "It was my mum!" Andrew exclaimed, and he showed her his call logs and also placed a call to his mother.
After speaking with his mum, he repeated the same phrase. It was because his mum promised to fly them out of the country after their honeymoon.
So, the issue was resolved in that moment. Both parties apologized for their misunderstandings, and the wedding plans continued, restoring harmony. The hotel was contacted, and they were deeply sorry for the damage they had caused. They promised to give them a premium package for not suing them as well.
Andrew and Anita got married two days later, and it was so beautiful. Thanks for reading.
