Running in the woods with the cool morning breeze touching my skin and beads of sweat streaming down my face. It was still dawn, with the cloudy sky giving way for the sun to rise and with mist all over . As I was running, I was suddenly reminded of my time back in Iraq with my men staring death in the face and defying all odds in the war.
I stopped by a tree to catch my breath and it was as if I was having a panic attack. I took a long breath and gradually breathed out. An exercise taught by my psychologist to calm my nerves. I remembered her gentle voice even as I breathed in and out, as she says,
"Centre your mind on what makes you calm".
Quickly I focused my mind on my wife who I left this morning sleeping peacefully and my lovely daughter in her room also sleeping. They are my centre of gravity and my world. Slowly I recovered from the panic attack. I started towards home with the anticipation of seeing my family again, but I got home and found my home rigged with police's yellow tapes, detectives walking around my house, an ambulance, and the paramedics.
Everything happened so fast that I could feel my heart beating fast, my mouth dry, my legs numb and my feet glued to the ground. I was in shock and dismay as I had several guns pointed at me with one of the detectives using a megaphone to say,
"Jack Morgan, you are under arrest for the rape and murder of your wife and daughter. Anything you say may be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney before speaking to the police and to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning if you wish".
One of the police officers handcuffed, shoved me into his car. His partner was on the steering wheel and he looked at me with disgust. I was quiet throughout my brief trip to the police precinct. Three questions kept buzzing in my head.
"How did I rape and murder my wife and daughter?"
"My wife and daughter are dead, how?"
"I didn't kill them, but who did?"
My name is Lieutenant Jack Morgan and I am being arrested for rape and brutal murder of my wife and Ten years old daughter.
