My name is Lam and I am a scientist, for almost two years now we have been investigating if somehow we can live on other planets. In view of that deadly virus that infected 90% of the population, we need a new planet to live on for the other 10% that are left.
Together with other scientists we found planets where we can live, only when the night comes the temperature drops so much and so suddenly that we have lost several men because they have died of hypothermia. But these are sacrifices they make in order to save the small group that is left alive on earth.
There is a very intelligent girl named Sara who is not a scientist, but she is determined to help us solve the problem. Nobody pays attention to her, her ideas seem crazy, but I have been thinking about it and it doesn't seem so crazy to me. I have even started with her to create the invention of our lives. She says that we will create a kind of giant heater that we will place at a prudent distance, it will be recharged with solar energy and it will turn on only at night when the temperature begins to drop.
All of us who are left on earth are living in the same place, we can no longer leave this big shelter at all, the air, the food, everything is contaminated. Periodically we send people to Mars to plant and harvest food for us. So living there we will not have problems with food or water, we will breathe pure air freely again, thanks to an invention of a scientific colleague who purifies the air and places the oxygen equal to that of the earth.
Everyone has been criticizing us every day for more than six months, since we started to create our giant heater. None of them imagined that a terrible storm would wipe out part of the shelter, causing the polluted air to pass towards us. Although we were each assigned a special suit, we couldn't stay in it for that long. We were forced to flee planet earth in several ships designed for that purpose.
Everyone thought they were approaching imminent death, as the ship's oxygen ran out one of the nights when the temperature dropped. Sara and I on the other hand were hopeful, our invention was divided into several parts to make the transfer easy and as soon as we arrived we got down to work to save everyone's life and even our own, there was no time for mistakes. We spent two days and two nights assembling the pieces until it was ready, we had already exhausted the oxygen in the ship.
Everyone said goodbye to each other, while Sara and I with the help of others who wanted to make the last attempt to survive we placed the giant heater, it could cover up to two whole countries, if it worked. Then if we wanted to extend it we had to go to earth with special suits to look for material to make more of them. Now we just had to wait for the night to come so that it would activate, I never imagined the pressure I could feel during that time, the hours, minutes and seconds seemed to go slower than usual.
When the night finally came, some were crying, others were screaming and others preferred to sleep to die without feeling anything. Sara and I who had been together every day during that time decided to use that time to tell each other how we felt about each other. We had fallen in love. If we stay alive I will make the most of the time by her side. If it wasn't for her at this point we would have no hope.
So the temperature began to drop, Sara and I held hands and looked up, there in the distance was a small light indicating that the heater was on. When the temperature dropped below 50 degrees Celsius and we all still felt warm we knew that our invention had worked. It kept dropping until it reached minus 150 degrees Celsius, that's when everyone realized that our invention had saved them.
They thanked us, hugged us, cried and laughed, apologized for not believing us.
I was happy, that clever girl had saved all of humanity. I felt the luckiest man in the world, I will never tire of expressing all the love and admiration I feel for her. We all continued to do things to improve our new home, we felt free, there was no more confinement. It was not going to take us long to adapt to our new reality, we were grateful just to breathe. Sara and I got married and are expecting our first child, the first child born on Mars.
