Nicole came from Royal College, the best school in town, as a new student in our class. From that day, she stole the show. Everyone in the class wanted to be her friend. Her accent was top-notch, pure British, and her skin glitters. From her glasses, you can see that is one spoiled brat who just wanted to be loved.
In those days, I had a female seat partner named Blossom, she was a very nice girl with a dimple whenever she smiled. She would buy me chocolate during lunch break and I sometimes returned the favour. But since Nicole was enrolled, Blossom would rather buy some chocolate wraps for Nicole than I. It made me jealous.
I thought that the best way to handle the matter was to confront Blossom.
Blu, I noticed that you have stopped sharing your chocolate with me since Nicole resumed our class.
With a guilty look on her face, she said:
I just want to be an intimate friend to Nicole. So, I thought gifts would make me get her friendship.
I pondered for a moment and silently said to Blu (that's the short form of the name we gave to Blossom).
Aren't we intimate friends? You and I?
I said as I bowed my head, pretending to be reading the literature text on my desk.
We can't be intimate friends by merely sharing chocolate wraps.
At this juncture, I didn't know what to say. I just let it pass.
Blossom and Nicole became the closest friends in the class whereas, I had to do my stuff alone. I could tell that my days in class two were like a battleground. The battle was one I was fighting alone. Soon, I decided to stay away from keeping any more friends. I thought that it might end up like what I shared with Blossom.
Soon, we entered the period of continuous assessment. During this time, we usually organize group reading within the class so that we would all do well in our class. There was some sort of competition among classes in our arm. The competition is always about who the first three students in each subject would be.
It was during this period that Blossom came to ask for help. She wanted to know which was the right approach to attempting an essay question in the English language. I did my best to explain to her but you know, I was not happy doing that. I guess that she read my countenance and engaged me during our lunch break.
You didn't smile when you were explaining that English language concept to me.
I winked at her,
How did you know? Were you following the approach I was explaining to you or you were busy studying my countenance?
Blossom just looked on and responded saying
If it's anything you want to share, kindly do.
I cleared my throat, then mentioned my stake to Blossom.
All I wanted was to have a sense of belonging with you but since Nicole came here, you hardly look my way.
She became so shy. Her face turned pink
I'm sorry. I understand how it feels.
Now, I got reassurance from Blossom that her attention for me be back as it were. No one likes to be neglected.
