Ada loved promises .
Not because they were always true, but because of how beautiful it sounded when spoken by someone you trusted.
Ada trusted and loved emeka.
She trusted the way he looked at her like she mattered . She trusted the way he always remember little things about her- how she loves onions so much in food, how she tapped her finger whenever she's nervous, and she pretended to be strong even when she was falling apart inside of her .
Most of all, she trusted and believed his words_all of them.
"I will never hurt or leave you" he once said
At the time she believed him completely .
Maybe that was her mistake.
They met during their first year at University.
Ada was late to class that morning, rushing through the hallway with books pressed against her chest . As she turned a corner, she bumped into someone hard enough for her books to scatter across the floor .
"Oh, I'm really sorry" a voice spoke gently
Ada sighed in frustration and bent down to pick her things up, another hand reached out for the same book at the same time .
She looked up.
Brown eyes.
Warm smile
Slightly messy hair.
The stranger laughed nervously. "I think the universe wanted us to meet dramatically"
Ada rolled her eyes. "That line probably works on other girls".
"It haven't worked on anyone yet" he said
Against her will, she smiled
And that's how everything started
Emeka became part of her daily life so naturally it almost scared her.
They studied together in the library, shared snacks during lectures, and walked around campus every evening discussing random things - music, dreams, childhood memories, fear .
With him, silence never felt awkward .
One evening, they sat outside her hostel while the campus light growed softly around them.
Emeka leaned back against the bench and looked at the stars .
"You know what I like about you?" He asked.
Ada folded her arms "Everything?"
Hey laughed. " Your confidence is worrying".
"Answer the question"
He looked at her carefully before speaking .
"You act strong for everyone else but , deep down, you just want someone who won't leave".
Her smile faded slightly.
That sentence touched a place where she rarely allow people to see.
Growing up, people always left.
Her father left when she was still five.
Friends drifted away .
Even people who promised forever eventually disappeared .
So she learned not to depend on anyone to much.
But Emeka was patient .
He stayed.
And slowly she lowered her guard around him.
And one evening, after months of friendship, he finally held her hands and whispered :
"I'm not going anywhere, Ada. I promise"
Those words wrapped around her heart gently.
And for the first time in years, she allowed herself to believe someone completely.
Their relationship became the kind that everyone envied quietly.
They were always together.
Friends joked that seeing one without another felt strange.
Emeka constantly found little ways to make her happy .
When she was stressed, he bought her favorite biscuits for her.
When she failed a test, he stayed awake all night helping her study .
When she doubted herself, he reminded her how capable she was.
"You know" Ada told him one evening
"You are becoming my safe place " .
He smiled softly "Good, that's exactly what I want to be"
And he meant it
At least, he did then.
The problem started slowly.
Almost too slowly to notice.
Emeka became more busier with school projects and new friends. Their calls became shorter. Their conversation lost warmth.
At first, Ada ignored it
"People gets tried sometimes" she said.
But deep down, she felt the distance growing between them like a crack spreading through glass .
One evening, she called three times before he answered.
"What's wrong" he asked distractedly
"You sound busy"
I'm with some guys".
"Oh"
Silence.
Then she asked quietly "Are we okay"?.
Emeka sighed heavily. "Ada, why do you always overthink?"
Her chest tightened .
"I'm just asking ".
"And I answered ".
Something about his tone hurt more than she expected .
After they ended the call , Ada stared at her phone for a very long time.
For the first time, talking to him felt unfamiliar.
Weeks passed.
The sweet messages stopped.
The effort faded
Sometimes, Emeka disappeared for hours without explanation.
Other times, he replied coldly to messages that once would have made him laugh.
Ada tried fixing things.
She became more patient
More understanding.
More careful with her words.
But love should not feel like begging someone to be interested.
One rainy evening, she finally confronted her outside the school cafeteria
"You have changed" she said quietly
Emeka avoided her eyes."people change".
"That's not what hurts".
"Then what does?"
Ada swallowed hard
"You promised wouldn't leave me emotionally while still standing beside me physically ".
Emeka looked frustrated " you are making this complicated".
"No" she whispered painfully. "You already complicated it when you stoped trying .
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Rain fell around them while student rushed pass.
Then Emeka said the words that shattered everything.
"Maybe we need a break"
Ada felt like the world stopped
" A break?"
"I just need space"
Space .
Such a small word for something that could destroy a person .
She stared at him, hoping he would take it back.
But he didn't
The break became permanent .
Days turn into weeks .
Weeks turned into months.
Emeka stopped calling.
Stopped checking up on her.
Stopped showing up completely
And the worst part?
He moved in easily.
Ada heard about the new girl through Friends before she ever saw them together herself.
But seeing them laughing on campus felt different from rumors.
It felt real.
Painfully real.
That night Ada cried harder than she ever had before .
Not because she lost him.
But because she trusted him.
Because she believed every promise he made.
Because someone who once called her his safe place became why she no longer felt safe loving anyone.
Time passed slowly after that.
Healing wasn't dramatic.
There were no magical moments where the pain disappeared overnight
Some morning still hurts.
Some songs reminded her of him.
Some memories still returned without warning.
But little by little, Ada rebuilt herself.
She laughed again.
Focused on school again.
Smiled genuinely again.
And one evening, while sitting alone outside her hostel, she realized something important.
Emeka broke his promise.
But she survived it .
The heartbreak didn't destroy her the way she thought it would.
Instead it thought her something painful but necessary :
Never let someone promise become more important than your own peace.
Ada looked up at the evening sky and smiled softly to herself.
Maybe not every promise lasts forever.
But she had made a new promise now.
This time to herself.
And unlike Emeka's, she intended to keep it.
