Since Black Demge knew realization, he lived most days on the steep cliff of Oro, amidst the wild vegetation of a settlement known to his ancestors. He knew he had many siblings and friends in the settlement and noticed some of them had gone missing to date.
One day, Black Demge asked his grandmother, old ewe while they slept on a vertical rock face one morning, collecting daily breeze and early morning sun.
“ Why are we always missing in numbers” Black Demge inquired.
“ Young ram, don't worry. The groom mustn't peek to look at the bride while she comes from afar when he knew that she was going home with him” she answered using her proverbs like she always did.
Months later, Black Demge was moving with the flock as they were feeding on grasses, fresh pastures, and as they also migrated during that season.
Black Demge looked up and saw another flock of sheep which was different from them, their color was white and they grazed differently.
Black Demge asked his grandfather, the old ram about them and he said,
“ The white sheep are not like us, even though we are of the same nature. They said we are wild because they came from humans before gaining independence and believe they are wiser. They were governed by the old merino ewe” the old ram said and before he finished the statement, a long loud Awoooo was heard and everyone ran elter skelter and bolted.
“ Follow me” the old ram said as he jumped to navigate in the opposite direction to the unknown danger that was forthcoming.
Black Demge followed immediately although he had never tested his strength and that day gave him an opportunity.
Panic surged through as everyone was already on a mountain within a twinkle of an eye but a white sheep was left behind and as the beasts burst out in their speed and the sheep jumped as its hooves struck the ground in frantic rhythm. It leapt over low shrubs and scattered stones while on the other hand, the beasts ran relentlessly and swiftly.
Their focused were on closing the distance with terrifying precision as the sheep zigzagged wildly trying to confuse its pursuer as its body trembled with fear and all of them disappeared from sight after covering the distance the eye can catch.
“ What are those and why are they aiming at us?”
Black Demge asked his father who narrowly escaped the massacre.
“ The Alpha grey wolf and his pack” he answered and continued after one minute of gasping.
“That clan is among the ones that had reduced our population in the century till date” he concluded with a frown.
“ So what can we do about it?” Black Demge asked.
“ Nothing but to keep on running for our dear lives” he answered and left the young ram which was full of questions.
Weeks later, the white sheep elders came and had a meeting with the black sheep.
“ This can't continue like this” the old white merino ewe said looking at others.
“ Which story can you tell a lamb whose mother was eaten” Gele, the strongest of the rams among the black sheep said and continued.
“ I don't know about your plan but we will get defensive” Gele concluded.
“ What is your plan?” the old white merino ewe asked.
“ The black sheep will organize their strongest rams with the strongest horns for defensive combat, as self-defense to protect the clan” Gele spited and all other black sheep elders stood with him even though they knew it could be dangerous as it had never been done before.
“ But white sheep are not aggressive and you all know that we are peaceful” the old white merino ewe uttered.
“Why then come here if you have no other opinion” black old ewe said and she walked the white sheep elders out of the meeting saying they only came to know their minds which was true.
This serves as a slap on the old white merino ewe's face that she took it upon herself and ventured on a dangerous journey to the Alfa grey wolf.
The packs were busy feeding on the last catch when the old white merino ewe walked in. Immediately, the pack of wolves surrounded her and started growling and barking.
“ I came to see the Alpha grey wolf” she uttered in fear and as the wolves were preparing to lunch and attack her, the Alpha grey wolf gave a long loud bark and they all stopped.
“ What can I do for you, the old one who paid my den a visit, coming here is like you dishing yourself as a meal hope you know” he concluded with a loud Awoooo.
“ I am here to tell you that the black sheep are getting set to wrestle you” she warned.
He smiled as his sharp teeth showed vividly.
“ What of the white sheep?” He asked.
“ We knew that you are superior and we are comfortable with the few monthly attacks and any of us who falls serves as a sacrificial lamb” she noted.
Now they all know why she was there.
“ For this, I gave you my words, any time we are to attack, the white sheep will be speared and the black sheep will be the target so far they want to claim this territory as theirs” the Alpha grey wolf replied and allowed the old white merino ewe to leave without a scratch.
Many months passed and the packs of wolves kept attacking the black sheep in any given medium and the black sheep kept defending themselves and after so many failed attempts. The pack of wolves decided to go for the weak ones, the white sheep.
Black Demge grew to become the defender of the black sheep after the death of Gele who lost his life.
Leading the war that Black Demge inherited from birth, he will scream black sheep and others will answer black sheep for life to praise their resilience in this war that never ends.
