In the Asake shop, "Multi-Venture" was a treasure trove of old things such as: old plates, lanterns of different sizes, and wooden boxes that ancient people used to keep their clothes safe. Each item whispered stories, carrying the weight of memories. Some people used to buy things there because they believed that old items were of better quality compared to the present items. Each time I had a cause to visit her shop made me connect with the past.
One faithful day, I came across a young lady who used an ancient cloth during the amatan season. When I approached her she said the cloth is perfect for this period. It was her great-grandmother who wore it last. According to her, she found it in the store where it was kept with other items like an old lantern lamp, a wooden box, a wooden chair, and traditional handmade clothes.
When she was about to brood new chicks, it was this old lantern lamp she made use of. She was asked the reason why she prefers the old lantern lamp to the new generation lamp. "She said during the dry season, you don't need electricity to generate heat. The only thing to use is a lantern lamp, which will give you the normal temperature needed for that purpose."
However, it was an old wooden box her husband used to keep his clothes and headdresses. I asked her Why did you crave old objects items to the new generation of object items.
Her response was that old object items were durable in terms of durability. The object of the past tends to last longer compared to the new generation objects.
Meanwhile, an object of the past is valued more than a present one." Really, did you mean what you are saying?" I asked.
The young Lady reacted.
"Yes of course, the objects of the past are one of the most valuable sources of income to the government today. There are some things this generation is hearing from you from old people, but they did not know that such a thing existed. That was the reason why the government created the tourist center where all these objects were assembled to enable young people to know that they exist."
So, that is why, rich people used to spend their vacation at the tourist center to enable them to feel the true nature. And the atmosphere around the place.
In that moment, I knew that I had learned something profound: objects bridge time, connecting us to what's been and what's yet to come.
