Yetunde placed the cooler of food on the dining table and sat on the chair beside her. It'd been a stressful day for her in the house as she'd been making some beautiful decorations around.
It was Valentine's day and she wanted to do something special for her husband, Raymond. She'd decorated the dining table with rose flowers, candles, and Valentine's day chocolates.
She hung a heart-shaped chalkboard on the wall with sweet notes pinned on it. This made the room adorable.
She'd also prepared his favourite meal, beef strip rice, with a bowl of buttermilk chicken and banana Yogurt cake for dessert. The table was set and ready, all she needed to do was to have a warm bath and change into a beautiful dress for the evening.
She glanced at the wall clock and smiled for she knew her husband was on his way home. She eased to her feet and edged to their bedroom, pulled off her dress and stepped out of it, leaving it on the floor.
She walked into the bathroom, switched on the shower and the water ran down her body. She thought of the tradition being observed by her and her husband every Valentine's day.
Each of them gets to buy a gift for the other person, which means that the gift must outdo the other person's gift whooich makes it the best. She wondered what kind of gift Raymond was going to get for her this time.
The previous Valentine's day, he had gifted her a brand new car which had taken her by surprise. She never saw it coming and had squealed in delight. Unfortunately, she had gotten him a wristwatch and a pair of shoes which made his gift the best for the year.
This time she was very certain her gift was going to be the best since God had answered their prayers. She couldn't wait for him to return so she could break the good news to him.
The horn of Raymond's car blared and she peeped through the window. He was driving into the compound. She giggled in excitement as she dashed out of the room to welcome him.
He carried her in his arms when she hugged him and claimed her lips to his. Her stomach fluttered as he kissed her deeply, it was the best kiss they had ever shared.
He released her lips and Yetunde tried to catch her breath.
"How are you, darling?"
"I feel on top of the world," she said, with a broad smile.
"Happy Valentine's day." He kissed her neck.
"Same here, honey. How was work today?"
"Fine, but boring without you, " he said and wrapped his hands around her waist.
She laughed and replied, "Really?"
"Yes." He made to kiss her, but she withdrew. " Baby, I want you now."
"No, not now. After we have eaten and shared our gifts; that's when we move to the bedroom to have fun."
He shot her a soft smile and licked his lips. "I can't wait."
"Let's go to the dining table. Come," she held his hand and he followed her.
His eyes gleamed when he saw the decorations and food on the table. This made him happy.
"Baby, this is beautiful and lovely," he said and planted a kiss on her both cheeks.
"It's valentine honey, what were you expecting?"
"The best," he told her and drew out a chair for her to sit.
He served the meal himself and filled the glasses with wine. She closed her eyes as he said a short prayer.
"You like it?" she asked, as he ate.
"Like is an understatement. I love it. It's always my favourite."
"That's why I prepared it for you this special day."
They ate in silence, Yetunde couldn't wait to break the good news to her husband. She wanted them to finish the food before they shared their gifts.
Raymond wiped his mouth with the napkin and drank more wine as Yetunde cleared the plates. He was very much satisfied with the food and thanked his wife for the wonderful food.
He didn't know how well to appreciate her for being a good wife, friend, supporter, and encourager. Any gift he got for her wasn't worth what she had done.
She was back quickly from the kitchen and he felt sitting at the balcony was great. He held her hand and led her to the balcony, and they sat on the couch.
"The stars are beautiful and they stretch till eternity. You can't tell how many are they," she said, in a small voice.
"Yes, my love." He kissed her knuckles. "Just as the stars stretch till eternity, so is our love."
She turned to stare at him. "I love you."
"I love you more." He drew her closer.
"What did you get for me?"
He scoffed. "I thought you had forgotten."
"Nah! I only wanted us to finish the food."
He let out a deep breath and said, "Sincerely, I didn't know what to get you because you deserve more. I did something special."
"What's that?"
"I got us tickets to spend the vacation in Venice."
Her hand flew to her mouth, and her eyes widened in surprise.
"Yes, baby. We are going to Venice."
"Thank you so much. This means a lot to me."
"Anything for you baby."
"You are my world."
"You are my life."
She smiled and said, "I have the best gift for you. "
"Okay. What is it?" he asked, curious.
She took his hand and placed it on her tummy. Tears sprung to her eyes as she gazed at him. He got the message instantly and looked at her tummy.
"You are pregnant?" his brows arched.
She nodded as tears cascaded her cheeks.
"Jesus! This is unbelievable."
"It is, Raymond. I am three weeks pregnant."
Tears spilled down his cheeks as he held her tight. It'd been four years of no child in their home and finally God had answered their prayers. He couldn't express how he felt and wanted to kiss his wife all over.
"This is the best gift in the world," he said and kissed her forehead.
