The mountains loomed ominously over the plains beneath it. They were shrouded in a tangled maze of deformed trees, each ruthlessly reaching for the limited light which filtered through the deep cloud cover above. Large brown flying creatures busied themselves in the canopy, concerned to hunt for lesser prey before the weather turned, and the ice took them into death. The earth further below was not hospitable. -

One of these heralds of the end of time was the deranged man who stood every Sunday outside the church with his apocalyptic demonstrations. He was always there with his misspelled posters fogging the car windows with his intense harangues, yet as he left the church that morning, as a stiff breeze swayed the cypress tree in the parking lot, no one perhaps except Sam noticed he was gone, a shiver ran down his spine as the wind swirled autumn leaves in the middle of the pavement. -

Even though it was dim, the light that came in through the slit of the broken window hit a photo hanging on the wall. It is a family photo of the apartment owner: A young man wearing a suit, posing with his wife and child, a little girl wearing a pink fedora. The photo had been taken at last year's summer holiday parade—all of which was clearly visible against the backdrop of the banner where they were standing. -
